Engine Issue 86 305 tpi 3rd gen iroc-z
Went to go start my car to day it did not want to idle. held it at 1k for about 5 minutes threw 21,33,34,43 ran it through the book and my dad said it might be our tps going out. also, it was blowing out black smoke that smelt like really burnt chinese food when he revved it.

You can test the tps with a voltmeter to see if it is working, I am sure there is an article on here, but basically you need to make sure it reads the appropriate voltage when closed and transitions smoothly to WOT.
More background might be useful in troubleshooting, any issues with it lately? Anything change recently? Has it ever billowed out smoke before?
Bad idle can be a lot of things, some benign like bad gas. It's easy to check for a vacuum leak, which can cause a horrendous idle and set off MAF/MAP codes I believe. I would reset the ECU and try again to make sure you clear any old codes in there. Hope that was useful.

We Replaced the tps today and now wont idle when its cold. when its partially warm it idle's around 400 - 500 rpm. when completely warmed up it runs almost normal. maybe fouled plugs? this is the only time it has blown any black smoke. and the only major change was a Pennzoil oil change. and it was boiled over last week. (blame a broken splice to the fan relay someone put on)
oh and btw we have a light problem the green wire going to all the headlights then going to the switch in the cab was spliced by the driver side headlights 4 into 1 WHO DOES THAT so every once in a while the drivers turn signal goes out and the low beams lose a little bit of power and i guess the power from the left turn signal goes to the headlights because they go on dimly. this is only fixed by rolling that 4 into 1 splice in your fingers till the low beams kick bright.
