84 camaro 383 starter issues

I have a 84 Z28 with a 383, i've had starter problems. I been using a mini starter for marine apps. i just recently bought a starter from db electrical that is a in line starter for 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. I have a 168 tooth flywheel. I have 1 3/4 long tube headers does anyone know how to mount it to get the proper header clearance. It has adjustable mounting block or does anyone have any other starter they recommend

There are 2 usual kinds of mini-starters; those based on Hitachi motors, or on Nippondenso ones. The actual motor part is the same from one "brand" to another; the part that varies according to whose name is on the box you took it out of, is merely the block that mounts it to the engine.

Hitachi http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-829000/
ND http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-820323-OS/

They fit quite a bit different, but the principles ar ethe same.

Which motor have you got? Where is it having trouble fitting?

It's rubbing the header when i try to the bolt in thats closest to the flywheel. I'm guessing i have to adjust the mounting block for the right clearance.

So yeah, depending on where it rubs, you might try "clocking" it around... if it rubs on the motor body, you're SOL with that kind, but if it's rubbing on the solenoid, you might be able to move that inward toward the block and fix it.

What part of the starter does the header hit?

From what i can see the body of the starter the very back of it touching the header.

Re: 84 camaro 383 starter issues

If it's the body of the starter, you have 3 choices...
  1. Small flex plate
  2. Different starter
  3. Different headers (or damage the ones you've got)
Not much else available.
