Fuel Guage Question

Hi Ya'll,

Not sure if this is the right message board for this.... What would be the primary cause of the needle in the fuel gauge not holding steady? Not familiar with fuel systems, but if I had to guess, someting to do with signal from a float or something in the fuel tank that's sloshing around as I drive. Car is on jack stand for other reasons and would like to fix this while up in the air. What needs to be replaced? Gas tank has to come out?

Thanks!

i would do everything before i took the gas tank out its not fun. My 82 does the exact same thing and ive looked at my sending unit before and theres nothing wrong with it. I think this is mostly due to the fact that these cars dont have baffles in the tank to keep the fuel from sloshing around as you drive, the way newercars do. I wouldnt worry to much unless its just drastically off and in that case i would remove the guage cluster and check the connections.

Re: Fuel Guage Question

My Firebird has this exact same problem and it's infuriating. The needle will bounce around constantly while driving, fluctuating as much as a quarter of a tank.

My kingdom for a modern fuel sender unit.
