Possible VATS issue? 89 IrocZ 5.7 Auto
Ok well to start I have
1989 IrocZ 5.7 TPI Auto with all new..
fuel pump, fuel strainer, fuel filter, starter, oil pressure sensor, MAF relay, oil filter, harmonic balancer, timing chain cover, spark plugs, cap, rotor, oil dipstick, belt.
All new gaskets on the bottom end. Used but still good ignition module to coil wire, 700R4 with all new gaskets and kickdown cable. New after market cable selector for trans but it's 1/4 to 1/2 too short. =/
The battery is new but I had been cranking to get the starter going. I finally did, turned out the safety neutral was off and I was able to move the shifter with out the key in. I just dropped the steering columns 2 bolts and moved the shifter back n forth till it fell in place. So it cranked then and I had spark.
Then it was on to the fuel pump to see why it wasn't priming. I took all the relays out to check the harness with a light tester. Harness was good, i put them all back into place. Turned out someone put a 30amp fuse on the harness next to the battery. (it looked slightly melted) Changed it out for a new 20amp. Fuel pump primed and had good pressure. (I put in new o rings at the fuel filter cause it was leaking - fixed-)
But now the starter wasn't cranking and the service engine soon light is on. But and get this, if I take out the 20amp fuse for the fuel pump out and turn the key on the SES light turns off.
So all in all - turn the key - Pump primes - Security light comes on then off - SES Light stays on - No crank.
Any and all is greatly appreciated!!

Need to check the whole starter circuit from Ign switch to starter solenoid to see where you are loosing power when in the START position
