Burning smell, Volt gauge dropped

I just finished driving my car home and the whole way back, it smelled like something was burning. I noticed that the volt gauge dropped from where it normally sits at which is 14 to 14.5 down to mid 11's to low 12's. My alternator is only a few months old. Is it possible for it to be going out already or should I be looking for something else?
