Wondering if I should use something like rotella T, or sythentic royal purple or something.
Car seems too have a miniscule Rear main seal leak, kinda worried about switching too sythentic because of that.
Any Ideas guys, and just straight forward answers please.

Put synthetic in the engine. If you have seals leaking, repair the leaks.

Re: Oil and Filter switch maybe?

I have been running synthetic Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-30 oil with there Extended Performance "long" filter for over 9 years on an engine with 109,166 miles now. Strange thing is that when I bought the car it had the famous smoke on startup for the first 6 months and then disappeared.

Re: Oil and Filter switch maybe?

I only use wix filters and on most of my cars I use synthetic Mobil 1 10W30 or 10W40 oil and if engine has a flat tappet cam I dump in a half bottle of lucas TB zinc plus or Break-In Oil AdditiveW/ Zinc with every oil change.

Which over sized filter are you running? I'd blame the filter before I'd blame the oil.

im a firm believer in "wix" filters. I also use conventional "Castrol GTX" oil. I find any engine with more than 100,000 miles should be run on 10-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer. this makes for a happy engine. I never use 5w30 in anything worth keeping

Re: Oil and Filter switch maybe?

i've been using valvoline vr-1 oil for many years. it still has the added ZDDP for hyd cam/lifters. no problems here.

i run an a/c delco filter with no issues, but i have heard many times that wix is top of the line.

5W-30 is what Mobil 1 recommended so that's what's in there.
I live in wine country and we get some rain in the winter but most of the year its absolutely beautiful . Not to hot or cold so I drive my car all year long. It runs clean and does not burn oil, but if you think I could be hurting the car I'm always willing to learn so what's up with the oil I'm running ?

Re: Oil and Filter switch maybe?

Ditch the Delco filters. I lost 2 motors a few yrs ago b4 I figured out they had changed the guts of them.
Wix, napa gold and a few others are still good.

NO MORE AC DELCO, they went to elcheapo guts.

first ,synthetic oil is in a whole nother league than conventional oils. if you live where the temps don't vary much, and your engine is sound. mobil-1 is a good choice. I live in eastern TN. most if not all the engines I service come to me with between 50,000 and 150,000 miles on them. you cant put synthetic oil in a engine with more than 10,000 miles. it WILL find a way out.

Re: Oil and Filter switch maybe?

OK, when I bought my car it had 87,000 miles on it. In the last 9 years I have only put 22,000 on it. The speedo rolled over and its setting at 9,000 (actual 109,000 miles)
My car was a wreck but the engine and wiring were unmolested so I must have gotten lucky because the first thing I did was change all the fluids and filters. Like I said,it smoked on startup but that went away after about 6 month of running the Mobil 1 EP Synthetic. I've really only started to work on cars and this is the only one.
I don't have the experience of some of you and can only speak as to what mines been like.
