Does a Hydraulic Roller Cam and Vortec Dizzy need a bronze gear?
Hi Guys,
I've got a 400SBC going into my TA for a x24 conversion and just wanted to check if I'll need to use a bronze gear for the distributor?
This is the cam I'm going with:
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=158&sb=2
And the distributor is a stock vortec 5.7L dizzy to use for the CMP sensor.
The cam details say to use a bronze fuel rod tip if using high pressure oil pump, but doesn't mention dizzy gear, and if the vortecs had roller cams standard then it should be set up for it yes?

A bronze distributor gear depends on the gear that's on the camshaft. Most gears are soft cast gears which work fine with stock distributor gears. The cam information says nothing about requiring a bronze gear so it doesn't need one however the link in the cam card points to a composite gear. It also points to a lot of other components that you may or may not need.
Rule of thumb. If it doesn't say you need a bronze gear then you don't need one but it won't hurt to install one.

Most of the cams comp cams grinds are on iron instead of billet steel. Its the billet steel cams that require the special gears. I believe Chevy roller cams are steel. I know when I had my LT4 hot cam it was steel and required a special gear. The Ram jet 350 cam also requires a gear which I almost went with. When I ordered my cam from Comp cams they told me I could use a normal gear as there cam was iron instead of billet steel. They did not recommend a bronze gear though they recommended a melonized steel gear. Being that the vortec had a roller cam in it, the cam gear is probably a melonized gear anyways which if it is, is compatible with any cam material. Like the cam choice going to have a lot of torque.

I wanted something tough, but it's going to be a daily driver and the rest of the car isn't setup to handle high revs and HP, plus I only paid $150AU for the cam (probably about $80US by now).
I figured with the motor setup, I can always put in a 292HR and 3.45 gears if I want more later.

Ya you can shove a pretty large cam in a 400 but I am a big fan of high torque motors. If I feel I need a lot more power and the normal mods have already been performed the first place I look is heads and then the cam. Too many people pic too large of cam for too little head. Unless its a 305 than I am looking at selling it for a 350

Yeah, well the heads can definitely take it, they 195AFRs that have ported like crazy and opened up to about 220cc intake, but I don't want too much cam that it loses driveability.
The old motor in it was a tired 350 crate motor, so this will already be a pretty big step up. When I need more power, I'll recam it and gear it and that should be all I need to spend on it for a while.
