1985 Firebird trans am stutter
Hey guys I had a problem with my car. I will be going about 40 mph coasting and when I want to accelerate to speed up the cars rpm dies for a second or two before reving up and gaining speed. I did some research on the problem and found it could be any number of things. i did a pretty basic tune up: rotor, cap, plugs, and the fuel filter. So after everything was installed and correct I took it on a ride again to see if it was fixed. Now its almost worse! I can feel more power when I take off from the new plugs so thats always good
but when i get around 4000-5000 rpm the engine stutters and acts up. now i heard it might be a carb issue, to take it apart and put it back together with clean kit and gaskets (or have someone do it) oh and that was from the autozone guy. i come here for better help and hopefully help from someone who had the same problem.
-i got the car about a month ago
-guy said it was sitting a while with fuel stabilizer and what not.
-guy said he took care of the car like his baby...but when i look under the hood there was a lot of jerry rigging going on. like the clutch relay was taken out and put into a switch so that the car could start with out the clutch (the wire was crappy and put together with tape and ugh... hate to be cliche but if youre going to do the job....do it right!)
-new plugs (god those things suck to put in)
-the gas relay to the charcoal box (or something) that goes into the carb has been capped off since there is no emissions here in arizona. some reason there was gas in the hose. the hose was dried out and crumbly so we just capped it off at the carb.
-305 5.0L engine v8
-Holley carb (dont think it came with the car)

alright so as an update.... i tuned up the carb, screwing the needle in until it started to glug and act stupid, then backed it out about 1/8th of a turn on both needles. it fixed the low rpm take offs and coast problems but im still having the stutter at high speeds. i have noticed that it stutters when i put a lot of gas. if i press the pedal 1/4-1/2 of the way in when accelerating i get a constant rpm increase... but if i put the pedal to the floor or 3/4 of the way in it gets all stuttery and jumpy

There is a link here on the site that tells how how to tune it. That's classic "Quad bog". You need to tighten up your secondaries.
on the passenger side of the carb where the butterfly valve of the secondaries is you should see a screw. Under this is an allen screw. Loosen the allen screw and then loosen the screw on the side until the secondaries flop open. Then tighten back up until they'll flop open with finger pressure but snap back when you let go. Tighten the allen screw. This should help with your "bog/stutter" issue.
What happens is the secondaries flop open letting too much air into the mixture.

nice! i will have to look at that in the morning... unfotunantly i have....yet another problem (seems like a trend with the car
but i went and replaced the wires because idunno it seems like something that should have been done. I took the old ones off and thought hey... i should label these so i know where they go... then i thought oh i will just take them off one at a time and then put the wire in the corresponding order...you know the standard....18436572. i started taking the wires out and replacing them 1 lined up....8 lined up and then it started getting funky the next 3 wernt the right order (or what it should have been) i lost count of what wire went were (fml) and decided to just order it in the standard 18436572 going counter clockwise where 1 is at the 5'oclock position. tried to start the car and it didnt fire...sounded like it was having a lot of strain on moving the piston. it started for about 15 seconds before shutting off....it was clearly not running right. i did some more research on the issue and said that #1 wasnt at TDC...so i took the cap off again, found tdc by rotating the crank untill the compression came out of the 1st spark plug... made a mark on the distributor, put the cap on where the #1 plug is set on the mark for tdc then put it back in order of 18436572 made sure all the wires were connected correctly and are secured (took them off and made sure when they were put back on they made the snap sound) on both the spark plugs and cap....and still same problem....car turns but it sounds like its having a hard time turning. rum rum rum rum with a delay between noises (kind of like when you start a car with low or almost no battery (yes power is fine) im currently trying to get ahold of the last owner to see if the firing order is changed...is there a way to find out the order? I know for sure that its not the standard order because in the middle of changing wires i was for sure like...wait..what this should be number 4..not this one....
im so upset and dont have the money (right now) to get it towed and looked at.... this car has been a pain in the butt since i got it wish it would just stay fixed and purr nicely.... but i do have to remember its 30 years old lol

if it is the stock motor, firing order is correct ... i know this is going to sound stupid, but did you use the front plug on drivers side as plug #1? ... only other thing i can think of is it could be a bop, and not the factory 305 (bop fires counter clockwise)
Re: 1985 Firebird trans am stutter
is there a way to check if its stock? its got the sticker that says gm 305 on the valve cover. and yes driver side is 1, 3, 5, 7, passenger side is 2,4,6,8. could it be the coil? also do the wires have to be a certain distance? the ones i took off were labeled for what cylinder it went to and the ones i put on were not labeled. and they are all multiple distances long.
