Oil pan stud kits

Has anyone used any oil pan stud kits with a steel pan and one piece rubber gasket? I'd like to use studs, but my question is will I be able to tighten the nuts down enough to make a good seal, because most studs have a section in the middle that is not threaded. Has anyone ran into this issue? The one piece rubber gaskets are pretty thick, so it might not be a problem.

Also, is it possible to prime the engine with oil without having the intake manifold on?

I had a stud kit, each one was 100% threaded. I ended up ditching it because it made it harder to remove the pan with the engine in.

I have seen some of those too. Were they kind of like a long set screw with an allen key drive? If I may ask, what manufacturer did you use?

I'd be inclined to ask a basic question before buying such a thing:

Why?

(as in, what problem ar eyou trying to solve, that you think studs will be better than the alternative, and how do you propose that they would be superior in whatever regard)

I was having an issue where the 5/16 screw at the pass rear was not long enough due to the thicker one piece gasket. I discovered that the screws I had were 1/2" long. I ordered a set from Jeg's that have 3/4" long 5/16-18 screws and they worked fine. I just thought that studs would fix my problem and aid in aligning the gasket. I didn't really want to use them and luckily I didn't have to.

It's alittle late now, but a tip for future use. Any time you need external engine/trans/car bolts/screws head to your local hardware store like ace, home depot, lowes, tractor supply.

They sell all the same sizes and lengths needed for oil pans, timing covers, valve covers, carb, intake, trans to engine mounting, engine mounts to block, water pump, etc etc..

MUCH cheaper too.

The 5/16 x 3/4 bolts at home depot is 18 cents each. That's less than $3.00 for all of your oil pan bolts.

Yeah the hardware store didn't have enough of the screws I needed. So, I got them from Jeg's, the whole set for $6.95.
