intermittent starting wont start help!

Car is a 89 irocz 305tpi

I have a new battery, a new GOOD starter, and replaced the fuel pump
Has fuel pressure, has oil pressure

Sometimes when i go to start it will crank and crank and never fire
Other times it fires right up
I know the fuel pump is working as i went through the hassle of dropping the tank 3 times,
What can be causing it to not start ???

Re: intermittent starting wont start help!

Could be a lot of things, I'd probably be looking at a VATs issue 1st based on that info. VATs is supposed to disable the starting circuit, but perhaps someone grounded the starter relay.

Security light staying lit when it just cranks?

Another thing to look for is when it just cranks and cranks are the RPMs "bouncing" or is the needle stationary?
