305 lg4 - bogging in first and general performance
I just picked up an 85 trans am, lg4 5spd and am going through trying to get a car that has sat back up to snuff. Plans include full tune up and carb rebuild at the moment along with fluid changes. Right now the car is a bogging monster at high levels of throttle and doesn't want to pull much past 4k rpm. I figure the carb rebuild/tune-up should fix the bog, but is the poor little 305 really as slow as this one feels? I'm highly doubtful it could break the 20 sec mark in the 1/4 right now....

Sounds like someone has "improved" the carb by disabling the secondary air valve, such that it flops open too easily (or even, is stuck open).
Set the spring tension on it to about 7/8 turn and see if it helps.

Look for vacuum leaks. Those little black hard lines snap like potato chips.

Got the tune up done this evening. Secondary air flaps seem to be adjusted properly but I did find that the rotor wasn't even finger tight. Runs much better but still bogs at full throttle no mater how fast or slow you roll it on. I ran out of light so tomorrow I will search for vaccum leaks and check the fuel filter to verify adequate fuel is making it to the carb.

When you get some light, go outside and push the secondary air doors down, on the hinge you will see a little plastic cam, if operating properly it should lift up the secondary metering rods - good source of bog right there (the no fuel kind)
Another source of bog, when you take the top of the carb off, there are 4 (i think) tubes attached to the inside, over time these have been known to become unstuck from the top end of the carb, then fall down and restrict flow.
The air doors are a little bit of a pain to tune but when you get them right, it should be fine.

If you remove the top of that carb, you need to be extra careful not to break the TPS stem when putting the top back on!

Haven't lifted the top off the carb yet because I have no more full throttle backfire after changing the fuel filter. It smelled like OLD gas. Still have a slight bog sometimes but not always. I will run a tank or so through it with some b12 in there before I pull the carb off for a rebuild. After that, I thinking this thing needs headers and exhaust because it is GUTLESS!

Nothing to add in regards to the carb/running issue, but I was looking at and in contact with the seller on that exact car last week ! I was hoping it wouldn't sell until I had a chance to get down to the area this weekend but it looks like you beat me too it.
Congrats on the car and I hope you get it running again soon.

Thanks! I had gone to look at it back before Christmas but the price was too high then. He finally agreed to the price I offered so I had to ****** it. Put about 50 miles on it so far. Hoping to have it all fixed up in a week or so
