Removing distributor. Stuck?
Removing distributor. Stuck?
He Guys,
I need to replace the o-ring on the distributor of my ‘91 V6
Removed the discap, unbolted the 15mm bolt.
but here’s the thing...I cant seem to get the distributor to move or what so ever. Like if it’s stuck?
any tips?
thanks
Don

Can you put a wrench on the square part of the distributor under the icm plate ?
rotate the distributor back and forth to loosen it up.

Break it. Distributors are cheap and they do eventually wear out.
Re: Removing distributor. Stuck?
. What happens is that over much time the oil that the O ring has been holding back turns into a glue like sludge that makes it difficult/impossible to move it . I have had success with using two pieces of wood about 4 feet long , thin enough to get under the distributor on each side but thick enough not to break , making sure to not be prying against anything breakable as the fulcrum point , and pry it up and out that way . I did grab it by the base with something (sorry , poor memory of what) and got it twisting side to side before I levered it out . The only caveat here is that I did it with the upper manifold off and I don't know how much room you'd have with the manifold in place .Edited to add ;
Here are a couple of V6 distributors . In the first picture , on the dirtier looking unit , you can clearly see the sludge ring that's got itself glued in just above the drive gear . In the second picture you can see the recessed area of the distributor body below the O ring where the old dinosaur juice solidifies . (PS , the weird looking remains of a distributor in picture 2 are a pre oiler I made out of the nasty looking unit from picture 1)
