how do i set the timing i cant tell if the #1 cylinder is up

 

Easy way to tell if #1 is at TDC of compression stroke.Take out the spark plug,stick your finger in the hole and have someone bump the motor.When your finger gets blown out of the hole,bump it far enough to line up the mark on the balancer with the pointer.Then drop the distributor in, with the connectors on the driver's side.This should gat you close enough to start it and put a timing light on it.
