Do I need a stall converter???

Hey guys, I was sent here from camaroz28.com... I'm putting a used 305 into my camaro and its got some aftermarket goodies that make me think I might need a stall converter. Here's some background info- my car is a 1984 z28. The engine I am putting in is out of a 1985 2wd. The engine has a brand new Comp Cams c12-211-2 cam, Edelbrock EPS intake with a 600cfm AVS2 carb and the old heads off of my 305 HO motor. Transmission is a 700r4 out of a 1991. From what I've found/been told I think i'm looking at a 2200-2400 stall but I was curious if it would be much of a bear to drive with the stock converter?

Re: Do I need a stall converter???

Roughly speaking, I'd say the 2200-2400 rpm range is about right. another fellow here had a warmed over 305, 3.73:1 rear gears, and used an S-10 converter that ended up in that stall range, and it worked well for him. I'm planning to end up in roughly the same place.

What rear gear ration do you have?

And I thought it was just me.

If the 270° cam is installed with stock 305 "HO" heads, it is probably going to be more lively in the middle RPM ranges and beyond, but may not make much difference at the bottom end. Other pieces of information would be helpful, such as the gearing, vehicle weight, and intended use.

For example, a stripped-out chassis running 3.40-3.70 gearing, being built for autocross or short road course probably doesn't need much of a K-factor (stall RPM) at all, and especially behind a TH700-R4 with its first gear ratio. A bracket car also probably wouldn't matter much either, and even on a ¼-mile track it may never see 4th (OD) when making runs. A speedway car isn't going to change gears very much and a converter is nearly a waste. A fully stock parts-runner / grocery-getter is a different animal yet.

I plan on just having an easy daily driver that still gets up and goes when i want it to. I have a borg warner 9 bolt with 3.23 gears, and the car is pretty much stock so i believe right around 3000 pounds

Your moderately high ratio axle is already going to be of some benefit. 2000-2200 would be my chosen limit for a daily street car, and you will certainly want to retain the lockup clutch.

Even a stock cam can benefit from even a mild stall
