I have some questions about a 4.3. Did Gm ever produce a carbed 4.3? How hard is it install a 4.3 in a thirdgen? Are the motor mounts different than a V8?

1. 4.3's were carbed in the early S series trucks

2. The motor mounts are the same. Use the ones from an F-body

3. It would be a colossal waste of time to put one in an F-body. The most plentiful block in the world is a small block Chevy

4. The transmission is not the same, you'd need a new cross member

 

actually, the 4.3 came out in 85, and was in the astro van and the c/k full-size trucks. s-series got the 4.3 in 1987, and by then, it was tbi injected.

 

Huh? What do you think they put in the Astros and the fullsize trucks? You may need to move the crossmember, but you wouldn't need a new one.

The motor mounts on the 4.3 would probably be exactly 3 inches too far back if you were to put it in an F-body.

Are you asking about the 262cid/4.3L V6, or the 265/4.3L V8?

I am talking about the 4.3 V6 I know they are a very worth engine by EXP even if the hard core V8 guys want to admit it or not I was just wondering if they made the 4.3 in a carb version and what vehicles they were in.

Wouldn't a 700r4 or a t-5 bolt right up to a 4.3?? what did s-10s have? I thought S-10's and thirdgens had the same transmissions.

Also, I thought the biggest V6 that would bolt right into a thirdgen is a 3.1.

 

Transmissions are the same pattern, the 700r4 in my 82 is from an astro van--it even had the torque arm mount. You can get aftermarket carb intakes for the 4.3L and stick a 600 holley 4 barrell on it. This may happen to my 91 Jimmy someday.

 

82 camaro... someone changed the transmission in your car. I have a 700-R4 and a 200-4R in the garage and neither have the torque arm attachment.

A 4.3 is a 5.7 motor with the front 2 cyclinders hacked off. The bellhousing mount pattern is the same, as are the mounts. The engine will be too far back in the engine bay and you will need custom hoses for the coolant, power steering etc...

The transmission internals are different, as is the nose cone. The crossmember would have to be moved and welded or a new one would be required.

I have seen carb intakes and headers for a 4.3 before... don't remember how much they were.

 

i have a 4.3 v6 in my 85 camaro race car. i didn't know it was a waste of time or i wouldn't of done it. also didn't know the trans crossmember was differant ,i went ahead and used the one that came in my car ,silly me. i did have to move the motor mounts rear ward 3" or so to make it work.

 

Thats funny 'sleeper'--Yep, somebody changed the tranny in my car--I did. I pulled out of a wrecked astro van before I added a .5 boost valve and vette servo. It's been workin' for over a year now without any problems. I replaced the th350 that was in it, and replaced the 200 metric that was it it before that. Yes it had the torque arm mount.

 

There are difference in the tranny internals but none that would prevent you from using it behind a V8. I don't know why that's always the first thing I hear about is how my tranny is going to explode just because it came from the factory with a V6 on it. I put a shift kit in it and a Corvette servo and it works just fine.

My transmission has the holes on the tailshaft for the torque arm bracket. And it's the original '92 Astro tranny.
