Code 54 problem

So Ive been having trouble with a 88 iroc 5.0 tpi, that invovles long cranking times, poor idling, and stalling. I ran the codes and got code 54 and I did research on here and in the mechanics book and it sounded like it was the fuel pump relay. So I changed the relay, and the car ran worse. the rpms were all over the place and was stalling very bad, but no code. So I unplugged the relay, started the car and it ran better but had code 54 again. Does anyone know how this makes any sense? The harness that connects to the relay looks dirty and has a bunch of grease on it could this be the issue or something else?

Re: Code 54 problem

Code 54 is low fuel pump voltage , iirc the ecm gets the voltage from the ops splice. What is voltage at the ops and pump relay feed to pump tan/white wire ?

I haven't checked the voltage yet but I probably should do that. Its confusing as to why the car runs better when the relay is unplugged

corrosion at the splice maybe. Not sure if the pump is getting more voltage off ops vs relay.

well from what I've seen it seems it's getting more voltage from the Ops since it runs alot better with the fuel pump relay unplugged. Thanks for the reply much appreciated!
