Alternator clocking

I am having trouble finding a new alternator to replace my last one (R111838b). I just received one with the same part number but the battery post on the back is in a different position and won't fit in my car. (Car is an 87 firebird but must have a different front end in it because none of the other partsfor my make/model fit. 383 stroker swapped in). I will attach a picture, in case I am not doing a good job describing the problem. Have tried showing the folks at Napa, O'Reilly, and AutoZone without any luck...thanks in advance

Alternator on the bottom is my old one, showing where the battery post needs to live.

Re: Alternator clocking

looks like you need to take the 3 case screws out, carefully pry the front about 1/16" forward, rotate 120*to desired position, reinstall the screws Someone probably did that in the past, making output post no-standard position.IIRC,a 1/4 socket fits those torx heads.

Thanks. The box says not to re-clock the unit but I was starting to suspect that I would have to ignore that warning.

Re: Alternator clocking

Just don't pull the halves apart or you'll have to reinstall the brushes. I believe the front side (pulley side) is the part that you can rotate. The back side is connected to the windings.

Re: Alternator clocking

Just an update for anyone looking in the future--directions on the box said not to, but I rotated the back of my alternator by one set of bolt holes and it worked just fine.
