What cam with this engine???

Over spring break me and my friend are going to be building up his 85 IROC. Its a 305. We are planning to use vortec heads modified for .550 lift, a scoggin dickey vortec TPI base, an airfoil and SLP headers. Over the summer we are looking for a Borla catback and SLP runners. What cam should we run in it? Will the car be driveable with the stock chip after this?(its only got to make a 20 mile trip before it will get a new chip)

i'd recomend going with the xe268 for comp cams or powermax 2040 from crane except with 1.6 ratio rockers with that cam. it should run with the stock chip, just not very well and it likely won't idle.

LBC,

If you're planning to use Vortec heads on a 305, make sure they are the ones from a 305T (12552520) or have the smaller chambers. I've been looking for a spare set and they seem to be difficult to come by. Every place I've found wants to sell the larger chambered heads for the 350 and says "they'll work". Not for me, and not many yards want to split the heads off a complete engine.

Aside from that, I'd hate to pick a cam, since I'm never really satisfied with the ones I get for myself. You know how it is - "If only I went a little bigger... Maybe next time."

We are(well I'm going to be hes not to keen on cars yet, well I'm no genius either) picking a pretty big cam for the engine because he wants a very mean idle.
