LS1 is the third generation v8 found in the 1998-up fbodies and corvettes (vette might have had it in 97, not sure). The new truck engines (4800, 5300, 6000) are similar to this engine.
LT1 is the second gen v8 found in 92-97 vette and 93-97 fbodies
L98 is a first gen roller 350 sbc with TPI fuel injection. This has the same basic design as all small block chevys since 1957. Many small changes over the years but same basic design.
I think LO3 is the TPI 305. Also a first gen roller block.

Wasp,
What SlickRock is saying is that those designations are the factory Regular Production Option codes (RPO codes) for the engines installed in GM vehicles. Each one is a "family" and there are slight variations among each family. The LT1 in a Corvette got a slightly different camshaft than those in the 'B' cars, even though the engine was still classified as RPO code LT1.
Here are some examples of GM RPO codes for engines:

The surprising thing is that a lot of the case design and dimensions of the LS1 and LS6 engines is amazingly close to the design of this engine. Even the deck heights are the same. It appears that the relationship between Chevrolet and Mercury Marine was mutually beneficial.

On the 'E' entry, shouldn't that be L03 rather than L89? I've never heard of the L89...is that a typo or are there two different RPO codes for throttle body injected 305s?
