hot wire the red wire going to the fan relay to a live one when the ignition is on.
On my 89, my fan relays (I have dual fans) are near the battery. It may or may not be the same location in 88. Do a search.
If you have one fan, you ground one relay.
If you have 2 fans, you ground two relays.

I have the exact opposite problem. My fan already runs constantly, and I want it to run only when the fan switch activates it. All the wiring appears to be stock (no splices or grounds). Anyone know how I can stop this?

Which fan is always running? I'm guessing its the auxiliary cooling fan unless you have a bad ecm or a bad cts. If it is the auxiliary fan, you either have a)a shorted a/c high pressure swith and/or a shorted coolant temperature switch or b)you have a loose wire somewhere down the line that is grounding the relay. An easy way to test it is to (with the ignition ON but the engine cold and off) is to disconnect those two switches one by one (the a/c switch is on one of the lines going to the condenser, the coolant temp switch is located in the passenger side head) and see if it turns off the fan. If it does, that sensor you disconnected is shorted and needs to be replaced. If you disconnect both and the fan still runs, something else is grounding the relay and you should starting looking for exposed or loose wires..
