400sbc in a 85svo stang
i have a friend of mine that was given a 85 stang with the svo 2.3 turbo in it. he dont like fords to much but wants to keep the car adn put in a sbc 400, powerglide, and a 9 inch with around 3.73 gears in it. and yes the 400 will be built pretty hot. his dad owns a bodyshop/speedshop. and to show what his dad knows his older brother has a 70 nova that runs high tens on the giggle gas, and they did all the work. he wants an idea of how fast this thing will be when he gets it done. and to keep it on subject how would it run against a 89 trans am gta with a built 350?

If they build such fast cars, you'd think they would have a pretty good idea themselves. Definately need more info to give an accurate estimate. Just saying a "hot" 400 don't tell too much.

Why doesn't he just sell the SVO and pick up a Camaro or something? That'd be a much better idea, really, especially since an SVO will go for a lot more than a base F-body (I'm basically talking 3rd-gen, but a 1st gen isn't out of the question), leaving more money to spend on other stuff.

If it is an SVO and not a GT or V6 with the SVO motor, tell him to sell it and buy a thirdgen. Actually, tell him that anyway, because a Mustang with a Chevy motor is like putting my motor in one of your cars!

well the thing is that the stang is slightly wrecked and and his dad os a body man. and he acually likes the looks of the fox. but he likes the chevys because it is cheaper to build them. and his uncle gave him the car so he doesnt want to just sell it.

PLease do not hack up a collector car and put a different motor in it. Those cars are rare enough, sell the car to someone that will appreciate it. And buy something different to modify. If he wanted he could make that 2.3 turbo scream for very little money. Please ask him to reconsider.

Ya don't hack up an SVO. They're a rare enough car and there are plenty of people out there that will pay good money for one and appreciate the motor it has. And why the hell would he want to put a SBC into a fox-body mustang? A 302 would be a hell of alot cheaper to built than a 400 SB also. I'd just sell the SVO for what he can and pick up a cheap 3rd gen in similar condition and hack that up. There are plenty of plain old thirdgens out there. There are ALOT less SVO's.

No offense, but why are some of you so paranoid about someone who dumps a chevy engine into a ford, or vice versa. Big deal, its his car, so let him do what he wants to it. At least he doesn't buy things just because of the name like some of you fanatical die hards.

Don't hack the SVO! Those are VERY rare cars! You said it was an 85? Do you know if it was an 85 or an 85.5?? The 85 will have the sunken in headlights while the 85.5 has the flush mounted headlights. If it's an 85.5....the car is 1 out of 450 or so!!
Sell the SVO to someone who will appreciate it at least. You can get some good coin for one. I'd jump on an SVO if i could.
How would you feel if someone gave me a Turbo T/A and i wanted to put a SBF 302 in it? :lala:

The thought of someone putting a sbc into an SVO makes my stomach turn inside out. Those are sweet little rides. You can put them deep into the 12's with a couple junkyard mods and a $45 boost controller all while getting 25+ mpg and stock driveability. Dropping a sbc into a fox is bad enough, but dropping it into an SVO is horrible. Sell it to someone who will appreciate it and give it the kind of treatment it deserves.

I've seen plenty of nay sayers and I will agree... I don't exactly think it would be the easiest to drop in a 400 SBC either... takes some good plumbing to keep the engine from overheating and it is a hard engine to macine properly. If your dad is as experienced in these engines as you say, then stick with the 400, it can work if done right, but please go buy an F-body to do it. Not the SVO.
BTW The idea of a TTA w/ 302 SBF is very sickening...

DO NOT HACK UP THE SVO!! If you really want to put a 400sbc into a fox body that badly go get a regular 2.3L commuter car and hack that up. Those turbo 2.3s are very sweet engines, I don't have one, but a good friend of mine does, in a ranger (actually an turbo coupe 2.3 w/ 9.0:1 comp and a lot of other work). I'm pretty sure he could take my 350 GTA, but we've never had them side by side. Not only are they fast straight line but b/c of all that saved weight they autocross really well too.
Get your dad to fix the body, then do some of the cheap/ free mods nic was talking about and run 12s for a lot less $$ than any 400sb swap could.

Car: too many ...
what a waste .... they can get into the 12's on stock engine and stock turbo (just with some other work) for around $2k. I wish mine was a 85.5 .... spending alot of time updating my 85 to the 86 specs (PE Computer, Cam, Ect).
1/2 the fun is beating people without the sound of the v8 (yes they look over like 'HUH?!') or when you're driving in town and ppl hear the wastegate go ppssshhhhh and look around like 'what the hell was that?' hahahha
a heavy engine like that in the front would prolly ruin the handling also ....

how much would a.. lets say 88 mustang SHELL cost?..
in my opinion it's like taking a GN and droping in a 350.. now i ask, why?
repainting a Bandit Edition Trans Am metalic Blue and taking all the crome molding off cuz you want it looking nice or repainting a GS vette into a single tone grey or something..
and not to be a GM person or anything.. but.. wouldn't the drivetrain be easier in a firebird for a chevy engine?..

I GAVE away an '84 Mustang shell complete with running 302, T-5 and 8.8 with 3.73's. I gave it away to the first person who towed it off.
You can prob get a 4-banger with a blown motor for less than $500 and built that up. Hell, i almost bought a MINT 4-banger out of a boneyard for $200! ALl that was wrong was blown tranny!
