I think the Neon would have you at first but you'd catch him soon enough. Those are fairly light but still put out what, 150HP (or was it 132HP back then....I can't remember). Either way, I'll bet it would be pretty close.

the neon would most liekly beat the camaro...stock for stock atlest, i'd have to say a neon w/ 150hp is a mid 16 second car, while a camaro with a six is only a 17 second car (in good tune) mid 17's if it's just doing eh, ok....
don't really see the purpose of racing him though, the end result is that a camaro (faster, or slower) is a better looking, and probably in the long run more desireable car than a neon. So, i guess it wouldn't make much of a difference, just don't let him think he's faster, and you'd be ok.

Of course, once you add a turbo to a 4 banger all bets are off. Think Neon SRT-4, Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi EVO, heck even a Chrysler PT Cruiser GT.

I hate to see a Camaro lose but the neon would have you on this one. And yes 4 bangers can be fast considering most of them are extremly light.

I have raced against a Neon automatic stock in the past, I have won, I have a 2.8L Firebird, not by much, but I have won. I think it was a 1996 Neon that time

I think the funniest thing is some of these Camaros in good shape have higher resale values than neons that aren't that old. The neon is the just the k-car of the 90s-00s, another Chrysler pos.

It looks to be a close race, but im afraid that the neon may have it by a little unless he can't drive

neon has it, i used to daily drive a 95 neon sohc auto, from a roll i would beat alot of cars suprisingly. I was neck and neck with an 01 impala with a 3.8 until 70, from a 35mph roll.

It seems to me that the 2-door Neons are quite a bit more nimble than the 4-door ones. I've managed to beat out 4-door Neons from traffic lights up to 45-50mph on the boulevard, till I backed off for fear of cops, and I only have the 2BBL carbureted 2.8...factory horsepower on this motor is embarrassing, too. But those 2-door cars....like was said above, they're so light that those 4-cylinder's have no problem pushing them up to speed.
On the subject of resale value; I notice in my area's classifieds that a neon as late as 97 is usually listed for only $2500--and that's in GOOD condition. A '98 only gets $500 more. For Camaro's, however, I've seen stock Z-28's as old as '83 sell for $3500

Some neons are sleepers too though. Like i have stated in the past, my buddy has a 96 ARC neon with a built motor. It looks stock on the outside, and is quiet until it goes WOT. IT is a 2 door, weighing in at only 2200 lbs.

Losing to a Neon like that would just suck, period. I don't even think about trying to provoke anything new with 2 doors...with my motor I know better and am not about to embarrass myself by losing to an economy car like that. I have a bit of performance motor work to do

Honestly, I think the 2000 Dodge Stratus ES V6 I traded in 4 months ago would outrun my wife's 92 V6 RS. C'mon guys, we simply have to admit that a V6 Thirdgen just ain't that fast, no matter how many other good points they have going for them! Heck, I just like the way it feels sitting nice and low with that long hood in front of me, and that's gonna have to do it with this car.

Sorry fellas, I got a friend with a sleeper neon also. But as for the 2 door neons being lighter, they aren't. The 4 doors are like 75 lbs or something lighter believe it or not. You can look it up. And the Neon will probably win. I've had a 2.8 bird before and that thing couldn't get out of its own way.

The 4-doors weigh that CLOSE to the 2-doors?? I would have thought that it would have been enough of a difference to say so. That's disturbing.

Being a proud owner of a neon, I would have to say if the car was maintained and in good condition it will be VERY close. The automatics are DOGS. I have a stick and it makes it a bit more peppy. You should take him, if he has ANY mods though your toast. That is just my opinion

Ummmm
You guys do realize this is the slowest neon made right? It only has 8 valves! Even with exhaust hedder and no interior, it won't beat the 3rdgen. My sister has a Mitsu Mirage with a similar motor, I could outrun her on foot. If it was a DOHC motor, yeah, he'd probably have a close race, but COME ON!

Re: Hey Who Would Win This Race, Neon Vs Camaro
LMFAO, never saw this post before. About 4 years ago I had a '89 RS with a 305 and a 700R4 as a daily driver. The only mods I had were a K&N filter, an MSD ignition coil, and a flowmaster 60 series muffler. A buddy of mine had a '96 Eclipse (same car as a neon) that had a DOHC and a 5-spd with the usual bolt ons, cat-back exhaust, cold air intake, etc. We used to cruise all the time together, and raced almost every weekend. I almost always beat him, but it was only by a car legnth or two. Those were some of the best racing memories I had, thanks for bringing them back. God I miss that car.

Re: Hey Who Would Win This Race, Neon Vs Camaro
Actually at that time I had the 1979 Camaro, which was a lot faster than that RS, and I had previously owned an '89 IROC that was a wild modified street car with around 750 hp. But I hear what you are saying though, my first car was a (gasp!) 1862 Ford Falcon with a straight six, and I wish I still had it. My high school project was a swap from the stock six to a 5.0 and an AOD from a rolled 87 mustang GT, got an A naturally seeing as I drove the Falcon to my graduation. My heart has always been with the F-bodies, so I sold the Falcon to aquire the afore mentioned IROC. That RS came about some years later when my 79 Camaro was the only car I had and it needed to go down for some hefty repairs. So I picked up this clean black RS with fairly low miles to drive in the process. I wound up keeping the car for a few years, (it even went with me on my honeymoon) and it turned out to be the best car I have ever owned, that little TBI 305 got 28mpg regularly and never gave any problems at all. I hated to sell it and still wish like crazy I never did. Broke my heart when the kid who bought it from me was broadsided by a drunk driver, he was ok but the car was not. RIP.

Ive build a few and owned just about eveey year neon and there peppy if done right, and there much better then some sport compacts aswell. Here are the correct motor specs
95-05 SOHC - 132hp
95-99 DOHC - 150hp
01-03 SOHC R/T - 150hp
03 SRT 4 - 215hp
04-05 SRT 4 230hp
The later model R/T take to mods great less teh fact the computer limits them.
Be aware though, people are stuffing 2.4 stratus motors into there 1st gen neons and they look stock and get mad power out of them.
