Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

You guys have completely lost focus with this thread (no pun intended). The OP made a fun, light hearted observation that cars have come so far that even a Kia (yes, a KIA!!!) will kick your 3rd gen ***.

Ha ha... har har... just laugh at yourself for a moment instead of doing all the mind numbing Gee, Louis!

At it's base this thread isn't much different than the Donald Thump thread a while back, it should be treated as such and filed similarly before it also goes off the rails.

I didn't bring up the lap times at the ring, you did.

I didn't ignore it, I went out and specifically posted evidence otherwise. I also asked you to show me that 8:03 4th gen, you haven't. If you live in a bubble don't be frustrated when someone comes along and pops it.

Old fart here also. I enjoy driving the 85 Iroc for the sounds, and even the rattles and creeks bring a smile to my face, it is the experience. The SB V8 rumble is WAY more enjoyable to me than speed. As long as it will run the speed limit, that is fine with me!. I also own an 05 Lexus LS 430, also a V8, probably the quietest, best built car I have ever owned/driven, but is boring as the day is long...yet, serves it's purpose amazingly well. It just doesn't bring the joy to my soul that the 30+ year old Iroc does....

I think the real point is that demolition derbies in 20 years will be a blast. A bunch of 400hp, 3500lb cars bashing into each other. . .

VinnyR thanks for the 90s era pics of those exciting junk cars for fair comparison. I agree there will be a lot of junk 300hp Ford Focus cars and such in the next 20yrs. Our cars will only get cooler and go up in value.

Just because your car is faster than 30 year old cars doesn’t make it cool..

What's Fun

Econo car driver: "Oh my gosh, that was so funny! I just beat that IROC! LOL!"
passenger: "HAHA! That's hilarious!"
Both together: "HAHAHAHA"
Passenger: "Look, the stoplight ahead just turned red. Do it again!"
Driver: "Quick! Take a video...."
Both: "BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!"

What's Not Fun

IROC owner: "What a dweeb. He doesn't know what cool is."
passenger: "Ya, I guess he doesn't realize what an IROC is."
owner: "Yep, this is a real muscle car."
passenger: "Yep"
driver: "Yep"
both together: "Yep."
<< moment of smug silence while a SMART car does a flyby in the right lane >>
driver: "Oh, the light up ahead just turned red.... SH**!!!"

Or, What's fun:
Pull up to a red light in your base model Firebird. Look over, it's a balding middle aged guy in a honda minivan with a cartop carrier, a couple of kids in the back seat, his wife is yackin` about something. You look over, he looks over, Oh, yeah, you see that look in his eye; it says: "What's under the hood there, pal? I know what's up here. . . you fixin` to beat me? Huh, HUHHHH!?"
There is only one thing to do when you see that. The eye. You rev all those angry 305 cubic inches of stock TBI powerrrr. He revs up that 3.something liter honda engine. You tighten your grip on the shifter, ready to bang it into first when the light flashes. Your heart beat settles to the rhythm of the engine, you find your focus.

HERE COMES THE GREEN!

3. . .
It's going to be close. You have to get this guy off the line or it's over.
2. . .
5000lb loaded Odyssey. 220 or whatever horsepower. . . 3200lb Freakin` Firebird, 170 horsepower.
1. . .
You step on it, he hammers it. A slight squeal as two high performance machines leap off the starting line. It's close! You hit 3 grand, bang shift into second, just as fast into third. Glance over, just in time to watch his license plate slide into your side mirror.

Slam on the brakes, just come to rest at the next red light. Almost a full car length ahead of your defeated challenger.

Racing is always fun, even if you lose!

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

It’s funny when people try to race you and you don’t race back..

Then they look stupid and it eats them up inside because they’ll never really know if they could beat that IROC..

The growl of V8 exhaust has been scientifically proven to increase testosterone which helps you as you age.. The idea is that V8 growl sounds like a large predator which activates our body’s survival response.. When the Honda that pulls up to you and sounds like the wind when it revs their engine, that’s just sad.. Or one of those tuner cars that sounds like a whoopee cushion.. Not cool..

I can’t tell you how many people yell at me to do “a burnout man!!!” I just wave them off..

Once you hit classic status, you can just cruise in peace and look awesome doing it..

To get pulled over for speeding or worse impounded for street racing is bad enough but to have that happen racing a KIA, would be embarrassing. I wouldn't want to tell that story!

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

FWIW, I have a 4,500 lbs 4 door luxury car that is anything but boring to drive. Never was boring even bone stock. Hard to be boring when you have a 420 hp rated V8 that made 378 RWHP and 390 RWTQ STOCK and a stock 180 mph speed limiter. Stock acceleration below.

Just had a lame exhaust note. 2.5" duals with a X-pipe and magnaflow race mufflers fixed that.

A little tweaking with Uprev tuning software to give the intake cams a slight duration and lift bump at idle and some idle intake cam position change to tighten the LSA gave it a nice idle note.

hah... yep. That's the story of my 1971 these days. I get all kinds trying to hassle with me... BMW, Ferarris, etc... and they do some downright dangerous crap trying in the process...

I'm thinking WTF? You just bought an $100k car and you're concerning yourself with a nearly 50 year old muscle car? Funny how that works...

But most of these clowns are probably posers who probably couldn't even find the hood latch, so I ignore them.

if you want to challenge what I built with something you built, that's one thing (I dont street race, so it's a non starter anyway). but coming at me with some cookie cutter car that my grandma could could also buy, trying to prove what a bad a$$ you think you are? It would be like me buying the Camaro new in 1971 and then go trying to race a Model T Ford.. lol

uh...yeah... have an nice day, enjoy your new toy, and thanks for playing.

I drive the Camaro for the satisfaction of having built it myself, and certainly the thumbs ups are also cool as well.

it's not unexpected that cars with millions of dollars of R&D behind them and decades of improved technology are going to be fast. we just drive cars for different reasons.

Ya, that's my experience too. I think late model cars get more action because they are fairly predictable so the other guy knows what he's getting. But a car like my 'Bird is an unpredictable wild card. Other people know for certain it's not slow but unsure how fast. You'd think that would be the recipe for baiting races but it's not. People like to win, don't mind losing by a little, but won't risk losing by a lot.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

While I'd prefer a stock IROC over a faster KIA if given no other choice, I'd still rather be able to hang or beat modern tech.
There's just something about having a car that's much faster than it's supposed to be.
Watching that tachometer needle bend ferociously to the right is so much fun!
(got that line from an old car magazine )

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

I beat an 90s bmw 3 or maybe 5 series lol , once in my trusty 3.1 . Took em out .....no problemo. Watching my 3.beast pull ahead and laughing at the guy while doing soo was the greatest feeling ever.

Another time I was coming from the sfv on the 405 and had this riceboy honda with huge 737 wing and fartmachine muffler trying to race me so I caught up to the dude right when you start to go up the big hill over the mountains. He WOT..... then I WOT... See you bud..... I was goneeeeee. His weak little 4banger didn't have the torque to go up the hill. My 3.1 beast machine just kept pulling . Riceboy never caught up. Guess he was embarrased and juat stayed behind. Ahhh yup that satisfying feeling again.

I just race cars that I think I can hang with. Needless to say there are a bunch of new cars that wanna race ya but we know better. Getting my 350 ready for those cats.

Thing is, they'd probably have a pretty good chance below 50mph because I have 3.23's with a M29 T56 and I just have **** poor gearing choices for anything below 50mph. Polar opposite of the L98 now. L98 dies off around 4500rpm, while my LT1 is just waking up from a nap. Hammer it at 50mph though and you get quite the wake up call.

Its just now getting warm enough that I'm getting the itch to drive it. Still a tad too cold outside for the NT05 tires.

Just read through this since it was brought back from the dead...yes there are some fast modern import cars out there...hell Hyundai has V8 sedans.

But seriously..."bang it into first when the light flashes"? WTH? I'll race you any day!

I used to love sitting at a stop light, the line, or a tree, and listen to the dude next to me rev his engine....haha, it's all over but the crying. Or heat up his street tires...please do!

Generally the look on their face when I hold it at about 3500rpm and then leave with my left front suspension unloaded is enough, never mind the 3-4 cars I just put on them leaving the line.

But back to the topic at hand...Kia's. Buddy had one, nice car, rolled out, not very many options for a "loaded" car.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

In my youth I raced motorcycles on the street. After buying a 900 ninja and selling it a month later (at a profit), I still retain the most valuable lesson about going fast as a hobby. This doesn’t apply to competition, but will more than one in a thousand of us ever actually compete? But I digress

”It’s way more fun to go fast in something slow, than to go slow in something fast”

Ever pull up beside a Lamborghini or something similar and notice how bored the driver is? It’s probably because he doesn’t even have to shift gears all day... even if he has a manual, chances are he can do 70 in first gear. He will never use even 20% of that car’s potential. He will never feel the thrill when the rear tires get slidey, because unless he is a professional driver on a track, his car won’t allow him to. Sure, it can do 200mph. But he can’t because on public roads the bumps I don’t even notice would turn his lambo into a very poorly designed aircraft doomed to a sixty foot flight, mostly barrel rolling.

But in my 4ton **** wagon? Getting around a corner at all can be challenging, doing it fast and smooth is an art form. I can drift the thing without getting a speeding ticket. In a typical stoplight race I won’t reach 40mph in a city block.

I find I enjoy building fast things, driving them is.... okay....

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

I don't give a rat's a$$ about modern cars being 'faster' than my 34-year-old Camaro. It's almost impossible to tell any of today's cars from one another; they all kind of blend into an indistinguishable blob on any big-box parking lot. I've said it before, but it bears repeating: none of those cars have any soul at all (you know what I'm talking about), and at the end of their ordinary workaday lives, they'll go to the crusher with nary a tear being shed for them.

As far as Kias, specifically, go, they are still dealing with a million+ engine defect recall. My daughter had to hire a lawyer and sue them under my state's Lemon Law to force Kia into honoring their '10 year/100,000 mile' "warranty" when the engine in her two-year-old Kia seized. After filing for multiple continuances over a period of nearly two years, Kia finally settled out of court by replacing the junk engine and paying my daughter $10,000. I think the bastages got off easy, but I try to never miss an opportunity to caution others about buying one of their vehicles..

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

Clearly 34 years has soothed your anger towards any issues the thirdgen had when it was still in production, and it did have issues. You can look at the TSBs and Recalls for the car to see the more frequent/serious ones.

I love my thirdgen, I love its styling, even if not its handling, braking, acceleration..etc... All the thing that modern technology and manufacturing has improved on todays cars to the level that it would basically take the cost of a brand new car to re-engineer the thirdgen up to todays specs. It really would.

So, you got two paths.

Love what you have, drive it as is. Accept that its not going to hold a candle to even a modern Civic in any objectively measurable metric.

Or, spend money to replace, upgrade, retrofit, or in extreme cases Re-engineer it to do what you want it to do.

Either path is perfectly fine.

I just had my GTA out today after replacing the power steering pump and unleashed all of its 7200rpm redline on unsuspecting highway traffic as I blasted under a bridge with the T-Tops off. And currently the car is waiting for me to drive it to work tomorrow.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

I never get this argument between new cars and modified old cars. The vast majority of new car owners probably can't even find the hood latch. Who cares what they're driving?

These people that are continually trying to get me to race in my nearly 50 year old 2nd gen? WTF?

Seriously dude? You think I give a @!#$ about you and your car that my even my mom could go out and buy? Yawn....

I mean what does anyone expect? Car companies with millions of dollars of R&D budgets and decades of development are able to manufacture cars that can beat a car built by a guy in his garage? Someone goes out and buys one and that's supposed to be some sort of accomplishment?

These cars we build here or pro-touring.com, or lateral-g.net, or other sites... now that gets my respect. Whether they're $200k builds or just average builds like mine. We accomplish what the vast majority of people could never do and we can take pride in that actual accomplishment when we drive our cars.

I get so many thumbs ups and stuff like that when I'm out driving and I get so much satisfaction from that...makes all the hard work worth it. But these guys trying to prove what a bad-a$$ they are in their leased BMW or whatever (often times doing some pretty reckless stuff trying to egg me on)... its hilarious that they're still preoccupied with with an old car like mine... but i just either laugh at them or roll my eyes and eventually they just get frustrated and take off.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

RE: KIA Stinger:

Now, even more bad news for KIA owners, including the 'Stinger;' even if your engine doesn't seize up, your car just might catch fire after you park it, as has already occurred with many owners. KIA's "remedy" for the problem until such time as they decide to contact you to let you know they have parts in stock to "correct" the issues? Disconnect the battery cables every time you shut off the engine, and park the car outdoors in the open, and not in your garage or under your carport.

Again, my daughter endured a two-year legal battle with KIA's corporate before they settled out of court in her lawsuit about her POS KIA problems. So, to any current or potential KIA owners, I suggest you don't hold your breath waiting for remedy---hire a good lawyer instead; you're probably going to need one. Caveat Emptor.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

I believe it is all about nostalgia. I have owned faster cars and my Corvette that sits next to my IROC is by far faster than the IROC.

I don't own my IROC for shear speed, if that was the case there are a lot of better options to pick. Even modified.

I have my IROC because I fell in love 30 years ago. It's how it feels to drive, the sound, the T-Tops, Guns N Roses and Motly Crue, and the look. It is the memories and the dreams I had in high school of what I would like to have done to my car then that I can afford to do now. I enjoy the process of doing modifications and getting some time in the garage. It is relaxing, even knowing that 80s 350 will never be a world beater. Luckily, I have a blower which helps things out a bit more, but... ah someone is always faster. Owning and enjoying a classic isn't about racing and if it is, they have classes for certain cars for a reason. Cars built before '64/'65 aren't all that fast and between '73-'00 or so cars weren't all that fast either. So, our IROCs are not alone in the "won't win a drag race". I think people who worry too much about that are always worrying about compensating for something else.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

I'l be honest though, I was sad I couldn't take the GTA, but the GTA needs new shoes, and Adult me needs house downpayment money more than the GTA needs shoes. I was hoping to snag some solid 12's around 115 with the crappy gearing it has. But could not risk a blow out on dry-rotted tires. They got some massive cracks.

So I took the DD instead. Better watch out for those ***** Focii. Fresh from GLD with the TCG rental. I'm told on some runs I spun all 4 wheels when using launch control.

I ran it, weighed it, and wrote the 3430 on the slip. But forgot to take a picture. 2nd time around it read 3435. So I must have been on the cusp where the scale rounds up, and just a variation on the way it sat on the scale moved it to 3435.

Either way, both the weight, the ET, and the MPH were exactly in-line with what I expected out of a bone stock Focus RS. I only flubbed a single 1-2 shift, otherwise was flawless on every run. I snagged 5 13.4x second ET's at 104.x MPH. So I stopped running because I was happy with the results.

Friend snagged an epic sequence of shots when I dropped the cluch off Launch Control. Car took off like a rocket and watching the back-end squat is awesome. Think he got a video too.

Still sad I had to be an Adult and not take the GTA.

Re: BETTER HAVE A PRETTY HEALTHY CAR IF YOU CHALLENGE THAT...KIA???

I'm another nostalgic ol fart, I love my T/A for what it is, It brings me back to my high school and early 20s memories, It's maxed out just about on mods that you can do without going into the motor, I took my brother for a ride and all he said was "Holy ****, it's just fast enough to get in trouble, won't beat a Honda Civic but way way more fun" I had a younger kid pull up beside me at a light with some 4banger "Need for Speed" car, he revved it a couple times, I know damn well he'd smoke me so I just let up on the brake a little, stabbed the gas and smolder the rear tires for about five seconds while the light is red, light turns green and we both pull out nice and easy. His car is fast, my car shows off really well and looks good doing it!

Well crap, forget worrying about the Kia.

We should worry about the Yaris. Cat-back, Filter, Tires = 12 second Yaris.

And it only has 3 cylinders.

Pretty sure we aren't getting that here unfortunately. So we're safe from those for now. I'm pushing 400 horse in the T/A now and I still feel like I'm behind!

I recently started to dive in to the rally world (motocross/dirt bikes have destroyed my body and doing left turns gets boring even at the front of the pack) so I bought an RS impreza as a daily and as a rally cross car. It was nothing special, just a high mileage, manual 2.5L with like 140hp, but it was fairly small and light (a 2005 car). Even with old banged up suspension parts it was a friggin blast. The day I drove it home, I was hitting some of the bends faster and more confidently than I ever would have with my T/A. Straight line the T/A undoubtedly blows it away now, and it shows off better, but give me a track with some bends and I'd rather the Subaru. That may change as the T/A gets it's suspension set up.

I'm sort of at an in-between age here I think. I was born in 83, so as a kid our cars were some of the coolest things out there. I spent my summers in a little beach town, so I remember them running around with t-tops out, good music blasting etc. I was however, there for the explosion of tuners, the fast and the furious came out right as we were getting able to play with cars, so I do appreciate what the rice burners can do. I love how my cammed V-8 sounds at idle or going up through the gears, but rally car sounds with all the cracks, pops, rumbles and turbo sounds is awesome as well!

As far as the stinger, I look forward to lining up next to one and hanging with it and look at the surprise on their face when the ol trailer trash 3rd gen keeps 'em honest... It's already done it to a few new fancy cars, which is the best part of having one that is relatively quick.

The GR Yaris is a cool car. Its a homologation special. There is a massive amount of engineering in that car. It will be something to admire for anyone who is a fan of Rally.

Yes, the standard Yaris is a boring car.

But is an a stock iron duke Camaro a cool car? I think not either.

When I worked at Autozone my manager had a 10 second Hyundai with tons of time and money into the motor and on the bottle... No interior either... totally stripped to metal...

always taunted me saying he’d smoke my IROC...

That’s when I realized I was more interested in the car than the race...

Dude showed up with no seats one day... he was sitting on a bucket to drive it to work...

He may get 10 seconds of glory... but my car is freakin awesome 24 hours a day!

I've never seen a clean iron duke Camaro, they haven't made them since 1986. If I saw one tomorrow, I think it'd be cool.
