Engine Identification

When I bought my car the guy I bought it from said that it was a 305 TPI but a 350 TPI was swapped in. Is there anyway I can tell if he was telling the truth? Ive tried to look down behind the head to see if it says 5.0 or 5.7 but I cant see down there well enough to see anything. Any ideas? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

As I said above, I cannot see behind the block to get the casting number. I was wonder if there was any other ways of telling a 305 from a 350.

There are also casting numbers on the side of the block, and on the head deck just in front of the pass. side head. Go to mortec.com for a full listing and pics of where the casting numbers can be found.

Or you could use a flashlight and a mirror to look behind the head.

Or you could just pull one of the heads and measure the bore.

Or you could pull the oilpan and measure the bore from the bottom.

Place your foot to the floor if nothing happens, then it is a 305

The above method won't rule out 305 vs 350, but it will prove the car IS TPI.

Easy, just whip out your whistler and measure the cylinder displacement via a spark plug hole.

Don't have one? Just pull a head and measure the bore diameter.

Maybe stretching a bit to see that casting number isn't so hard after all?
