I pulled code 36 MAF Sensor Burnoff Failure - Need Help!!!

What does this code mean? Does this mean that my MAF sensor is gone and I need to replace it or does it mean something much easier (and chepaer) solveable?

Please respond ASAP

BTW Can I use the MAF from an 88 305 TPI as a replacement?

calm down there,,
its much easier and cheaper.
all you need to do is replace the 15$ maf burnoff relay. no new maf is needed..
this relay is located on the driver side firewall, real easy to replace.

and yes , you can use that other maf as a replacement IF you needed to, which you dont.

from what i know a mass airflow burn off relay fault is most of the time caused by a relay(on the firewall next to brake booster) when you shut the car off the mass air burn relay heats up the wire in the sensor to burn off any carbon on it. if it does not burn it throws a fault code.one way to check (the way i was told) is to run car for a minute with hood open, have someone shut the care off , and put your head near the relays right up near the winshield on the drivers side, if you dont hear it click it is most likely the problem.
10-15 bucks at the dealer, simple fix if it is the problem (more than likely the problem)

Thanks a lot for the quick responses, one more question though. Can I get this relay from a Chevy dealer cause theres no Pontiac dealers anywhere near me (my cars an 86 TA). Are the sensors the same?

You can get aftermarket relays as well from like an Autozone. The outer two relays use the same part number, the center relay (fuel pump) calls for a different part number, but can sub for the same number as the other relays. It's usually best to replace all three at once. If ones weak the others are also. Heres a pic Vader took showing locations.

Well you've got an 86.... is the parts car an 86? If so your relays on both cars are probably 15/16 years old, and all in the same shape. It might be good to diagnose with a part from the second car but I would put in 3 fresh relays for peace of mind.

Actually its an 88 but its still the same thing. Since I'm a student and I ahve a lot of different crap to buy with my very limited income, I don't think I can throw down 50$ for 3 new relays. When those relays are toast then I'll go out and buy new ones.

In the above pic, do you have the MAF power & MAF burn off relays switched? What year is that for? In my '87 Camaro I have the burn off & power relays as switched...not sure if it's my problem or just a switch in the picture...

You replied to an EIGHT YEAR OLD POST!!! I'm sure he's not sitting by 8 years later, still trying to resolve this issue... Actually, he hasn't even been on TGO since.....

Hmm, that's a good point...I'm not even sure...

That's probably why I didn't pay attention to the date, I feel like it was right in front of my face and I just responded to what threw me off.
