A few problems..

Alright guys, sorry in advance for the long post.

Anyways, I have more than a few problems. Really don't know the seriousness of some of them, but would like to know if anything is to be worried about.

First of all, it takes awhile to start up. Up until about a month ago I still had the original starter in it and it went out pretty soon after putting headers on. I assume the heat killed it. After that it was rebuilt and worked great for awhile, car started immediately. Then it acted as if the starter was going bad, but it was just a bad battery. Now after replacing the battery it starts, but has to crank for almost 10 seconds. Would this still be the starter? What else could it be?

Then I have this rattling/grinding noise. Not really sure how to describe it. It sounds like it's coming from underneath of the car and I have absolutely no idea what it could be. Any suggestions on that would be great, but I will be taking a video to show everyone exactly what I'm talking about.

I also have a VSS code and my speedometer isn't working. I did burn through the speedometer cable and have a new one to put on, so I'm hoping that'll fix the speedo. As for the VSS, what does it do and is it necessary?

When I first start the car, the idle is perfect to me. Right around 800 according to the tach..but we know those aren't perfect. Sounds like 700 or so. After I drive for a few minutes and let it warm up, it goes to a 1500 RPM idle and definitely sounds like it, or higher. I've done the minimum air procedure according to the tech article and it worked wonders on it. Should I just try that again, or could it be the EGR code I have?

The last one I know is the worst..I changed my oil a few months ago and it was a very milky brown and I knew that meant I had water in my oil, but every time I changed it after that, it was getting less and less milky colored. Do you think I have a bad head gasket or could it be that my dipstick tube is loose and comes out a little all the time and waters getting in there from that?

Thanks everyone, and sorry again for the long post.

Re: A few problems..

Can anyone help me with any of this? I'll have a video up of the rattling noise in a few minutes, but I'm beginning to think that it's some part of the exhaust hitting something. I'll let you guys give me your opinions soon. Thanks.

Re: A few problems..

check your fuel pressure. Maybe a fuel regulator or tank pump is needed.

Re: A few problems..

And that would be the solution for which of the problems? I would assume the idle, but the fuel pressure is fine. It's at I think it was 43-44 at idle. Anyways, here's a video of the noise. I don't know what happened to the actual video but the sound is still there so that's all you really need anyways. Thanks.

Re: A few problems..

If your system is not holding fuel pressure with the engine off could be the cause of the extended cranking time. Could be a regulator or injector. I had the same problem and found a bad regulator.

Re: A few problems..

Well I just replaced the injectors about a month ago and they were flow tested and everything, so I'm sure they're fine. The regulator was done about a year ago, so I don't think it's that. Why would that make it do that though? Would it be flooding the intake while it's off or something?

Re: A few problems..

I would put a guage on it with key on engine off just to see. It would eliminate somethings and give you a better idea. From what I have seen on the board there has been a lot of people who have had bad FPR's even relatively new ones. The one I had to change has a good rubber diaphram but had a wear mark on the disc and appeared to not have been installed straight. There was also a thread on here that talked about corrosion under the FPR where the disc seats.

Well I'll check into that, but I would really like some responses on the other stuff. Thanks.

Re: A few problems..

for starting do you let the fuel system prime before you start it or do you just turn the key all the way your regulator may be gummed up a bit

the rattling does sound like the starter while the car is off look at the flexplate or whatever and see if theres any unusual looking marks on the teeth

and i may be wrong but it sounds like you have a small vaccuum leak is why your car idles so high i would say after a ride pop the hood and listen for it but you wont be able to till you get the rattling sound fixed

Re: A few problems..

I let it prime and then start cranking.

Well I screwed around with the exhaust today and found a missing bolt for the y-pipe to header collector and the rattlings gone.

And I'm going to check for a vacuum leak tomorrow.

Re: A few problems..

I've been reading about the VSS and how it can cause the car to stall at stops and stuff, and mine does that every once in awhile right when I start the car, especially with the A/C on. Anyways, could a speedometer cable that got burnt through by the header cause the VSS code?

Re: A few problems..

1. cant help ya with this 1 .

2. you'll need to be more specific on this .

3. the vss is on the back of the speedometer , so if the cable is broken the check engine light will come on . yes the ecm needs this sensor for a few different things .

4. if you are getting an egr code that could be a few different things like the egr itself - egr solenoid - vacuum lines , you'll want to address this before adjusting your idle .

5. milky oil is never good , are you loosing any coolant that is not leaking on the ground ?
