moving your IATs works but go buy you some butt connectors, 15' of 14ga wire and some heat shrink for the butt conectors, cut factory connector leave about 6" - 1' of wire on it, splice in 7 feet of wire on each wire, then splice the IAT connector on and put it below the plastic piece that fills in the area between the rad and front clip

cost <$10 ..... if you got stuff around your house FREE!!!!!!

Re: IAT Sensor

The mod is worth doing. The Eckler's price is pure rape.

Go to Autozone/Pep Boys/NAPA (whatever parts store you shop at), buy a TBI IAT sensor (TPI simply uses a WATER temp sensor which is not 100% accurate in it's readings) and do this......

I put mine right behind my MAF, from the bottom. Completely hidden & nobody would ever know its been changed. The stock IAT in threaded into the bottom of the upper plenum. You can reach it to unplug the wires, without ever taking the plenum off. You can't have the hole open, it has to be plugged with something. You can leave the stock sensor in place, or find a flat plug to thread in. I left mine in there, almost 3 years ago.

maybe you can answer a ? thats been bugging me, is an 89 IAT the same as an 92, maybe other than the plug or something being diff, i mean do the have the same resistance readings

Re: IAT Sensor

AFAIK, the only differences would be between a TPI IAT & a TBI IAT (you want the TBI IAT for both).

Re: IAT Sensor

If they don't have an air temp sensor for TBI (or try to sell you SU109 which is a coolant sensor), ask them for an air temperature sensor for the V6 MPFI engines. That should be the right one.

You can tell the difference when looking at the two sensors. Pictures and instructions in our tech article here:

Hope this helps.

Yes, the temperature sensors on TBI and TPI engines are electrically identical, the ECM won't know the difference.

Re: IAT Sensor

Is relocating the sensor really necessary? Won't switching to a TBI sensor in the stock location accomplish most of the reading change?

Thanks for this thread though, this means my plan to mount an IAT on the bottom of a single plane manifold plenum on my TBI car would actually work.

Re: IAT Sensor

It sure is not necessary (as proven by a lot of TPI cars still driving on the road and passing emissions), however, it helps a little.
Switching to a real air temperature sensor in the stock location would help a little but relocating the sensor to read real air temperature is the main intended goal.

The TBI engines already have the IAT/MAT sensor located in the air filter, away from heat so there is no recolation necessary. This only benefits TPI engines.

However, I still would love to see some dyno or emission numbers proving the actual effect of this modification. If anybody gets some, please post them up.

But, by mounting it on the intake track rather than the intake, aren't you getting an artificially low reading? The hot intake plenum is going to heat the intake air, not as hot as the manifold itself, but it's definitely going to happen.

Well I think there is a gain on a TBI car when using a non standard manifold. You see on a TBI car it's a wet manifold, and when gasoline is introduced to the vacuum of the manifold it instantly vaporizes. This has the effect of chilling the manifold. To keep things a standard temperature, the stock manifold is heated. However, if you switch to an air-gap type manifold, the manifold can reach near freezing temperatures. This causes the A/F values to start to drift. So I think on a modded TBI car, there could be a real gain with a sensor in the plenum.

I think it can still benefit a TBI engine, since the IAT in TBIs is in a metal "housing" (the air cleaner) which can be be subjected to heat soak.

This would require a totally different pre-carb intake system, but could be beneficial (IMHO) as well. Use a V6 y-piece (not a V8 TPI one), to put the IAT into.

Good question.
However, this "artificially low reading" is only relative to the stock reading (which is at the engine running temperature). If you want the air temperature sensor to perform its intended function, it must read the temperature of the air, not the radiant heat from the heat soaked intake plenum (on the TPI systems, for example).
But I think I see your point. If you wanted to measure the temperature of the air in the intake, the sensor should be located on a side of the upper plenum where it is not exposed to heat soak and where it is actually in the air stream, as opposed to the stock lower part of the plenum, all the way back where there is no airflow.

It would be easier to make a conclusion if we had numbers to compare. If you are planning on performing this modification in steps and logging some numbers, that would be great, I'd love to see the results.
However, it wouldn't be easy to do it the right way, you'd need three sensors in two locations and switch them on the fly and make separate dyno runs.
Which, for this simple mod, might not be even worth it.

I'd love to discuss this more, feel free to PM/email me so that we don't litter this thread.

Regards
Lou

Re: IAT Sensor

I'm very interested in real data recording as well, but I have a TBI car and don't plan on moving to a TPI system.

hmmm i been using a resistor that i got set up to be 60 degrees i cant remember the value, anyway, i figured to go back to having a actual IAT found a harness at a j/y got it and got a 92 IAT and the car ran like pure dog doodie, put that resistor back in and it ran fine again

When I did this (OK...BigBadLou actually did the physical work for me) my MPG increased by 2mpg on average, with ONLY the IAT "conversion".

I'd guess that your resistor calculations were off.

no it ran perfect with the resistor and like dog doodie with the IAT installed, and the IAT was NIB

I can only guess your install had a problem, or they sold you a bad one. It happened sometimes, NIB.

I drove to his house. He swapped them, I drove home. Zero problems.

Hey everyone, we bought one of those performance chips. Where does the darn thing go though? Have a 1990 Camaro RS.
