TPI onto '71 engine

I'm thinking about buying a tore up 350 that was in my buddy's 71 C10..... needs a complete rebuild, & I'm wanting to put a SD Tune Port on it that I'm gathering parts for.... basically I would just use the block but how would everything bolt up?? Would I need to get a pre-86 intake base?? Could I use centerbolt sytle heads?? Any other problems in dropping a '71 engine in a later model truck??

Thanks,

-Timbo-

I'll be doing the same thing to a 76 block in the future. I was told by my chassis guy that the intake base will bolt up providing the heads have the same bolt angle.

Mind you, this guy usually works on Hemis with carbs and blowers...

If you use the '87+ CB heads, you can use the same intake (assuming the SD is from a '90-92), or you can use older heads and elongate the center 4 holes...I've not done that, but no one has mentined illeffects from it.

And yes, you could look for the older style intake, or maybe one from a Vette, I think they all stayed with the older inake pattern.

well I talked to someone on hear who, put his tpi on a zz4 crate motor. Now he said the heads were like the old style, and that he just went to a machine shop and they drilled new holes in the intake. Also the aftermarkter intakes are set up like that too. My edelbrock has the holes set up for old and new style heads. So there should be no prob hooking it up to a 71.

350 blocks were unchanged from their introduction in the late 60s until 1986 when they went to a 1-piece rear main seal.

I'm using a 71 block in my IROC, and all of the factory TPI crap bolted right in. The only issue you'd have is, like mentioned above, your intake is designed for the 87+ centerbolt heads.
