Drive Shaft

ok i had this weird vibration in my car and i kind of learned to live with it but not its annoying as hell i figured out from reading a couple of forums that its probably the steel drive shaft so i need to replace it with a aluminum but they are way to expensive is there some way i can get it cheaper like getting a aluminum drive shaft that came stock on a car and cut it to fit or is a corvette drive shaft the same size of a camaro i dont know can someone help me?

how do you figure buying an aluminum DS from a car that doesn't fit a f body and having it cut/lengthened will be more cost effective than buying one to fit?

Well, I think you may have overlooked that 83 and up Camaro/Firebird aluminum driveshafts will fit. No sense getting a vette driveshaft and reworking it. Yes you can cut and weld it yourself(if you have the equipment to weld aluminum), but it has to be straight and will need to be balanced. Or, you could also have the stock steel one balanced.

drive shafts aren't hard to shorten or lengthen, i've done around a 100. all you need is a lathe big enough and a welder. you'd still be time and money ahead to buy a DS for a f body, 3rd or 4th gen.

How much are you really going to save by cutting an aluminium DS? You can get one that fits for $150.

At least some 4th gens have aluminum ones; LS1 cars for sure, maybe some of the LT1 ones too. They are a direct bolt-in to a 3rd gen with a 700 or a T-5.

Not all LS1 4th gens had aluminum driveshafts. The ones with 2.73's and automatics had steel driveshafts.

A 98 V8 will have a T56 trans, but yes, ANY D/S from a camaro or firebird, 84-2002 ,any trans, will fit a 84-2002 camaro or firebird, any trans

also, the driveshaft will fit / work in 82/83 cars if the car has a T5 or 700R4 (not a T-10 or 200)

another common defect among cars amd trucks equiped with u joints is the u joint going bad and causeing noise and vibrations, maybe you ought to get under your car and take a look, do a little trouble shooting before you go buying parts you may or may not need.

I agree, my stock steel shaft is vibration free, including running it up to 5000rpm in OD(the driveshaft is spinning pretty fast).
