I want to get rid of all the comp contolled stuff in my 84 TA, tranny included
What do i need to do to remove the comp controlled stuff from the 700R4?
What electric stuff needs to be removed and what mech. stuff needs to be added to the tranny?

Actually i want to ditch the electrics all together frpom the tranny and motor. So to completely get rid of the ECU/electrically operated or assited stuff what needs to be done besides the carb, distrib?

The only thing that the ECM controls in the 700R4 is the TCC. There are at least a dozen ways of handling it without the ECM.

there are no electronics basically.... its all hydrualic and mechanical linkages... based on how far your foot is in the gas pedal determines most of how your trans behaves..

the torque converter lockup is what saves you gas at moderate speeds... like 40mph and up, cruising. you odnt want to get rid of it.... there is no gain, only a big loss in fuel econ.

 

You say basically no electrics, so whats there that is? And how to i get rid of it and/or replace it with non electric stuff. i know there is i just dont know how and what.

also swapping to a mech. speedo, got everything for that except the cable

Nope, only things i know i have that are comp contriolled or assited is the carb, ignition, tranny and gauges

 

The computer has nothing to do with the operation of the gauges.

For some reason I am thinking that the TCC was on a vacuum switch in 84.

Check for a piece on the left center firewall ( I think) that has a vacuum hose and a 2 wire connector.

 

My cars only an 84 shell wise, everything (minus the front end which is WS6) is 86 drivetrain, 100% electrical, interior, complete rearend, ect
I want to delete the ECM completely but not sure what i all need to do.

 

After more thought, I am now thinking that was on the 82 US cars and thru 85 on cars outside the US.

If your tranny has a 4th gear pressure switch inside it can be wired so that lockup occurs in 4th only

 

The transmission is completely mechanical except for the torque converter lock-up. This is controlled by an electrically actuated solenoid valve which controls a hydrualic pressure with the trans to engauge the converter clutch. When eliminating the ecu, you must either run a manual switch to control this function or install a control device(such as a vaccum switch). There is no mechanical way to do this. Nothing that can be changed to mechanical devices, etc. If you do not lock up the converter when cruising in OD, you will eventually burn up the trans, as 80% of the normal cooler flow is bypassed when in OD to allow enough internal pressure to lessen converter slippage and to enable enough perssure for the lock-up function.

There is no way around it.

 

There is on 700R4s before 1987.

 

what would i need to convert it to Vac?

Aperiron, you say there is a mech. way on 700Rs before 87, i got an 86. Can you expain more?

In valve bodies up to 1986, there was a lock-up valve that would determine a the minimum lock-up speed for the TCC. When used with a check ball in the nose of the solenoid, the valve would always lock the TCC above the minimum speed. Valve bodies until 89 have the bore for the valve, but a non-functional aluminum plug is used in it instead. Valve bodies in 90 and up don't have the bore.

Even if you were still going to use this method, it would be preferrable to still provide some electric control to unlock the TCC with a vacuum switch during heavy acceleration and coasting. This is how the factory did it on non-computer applications.

 

So it would probably be better just to leave it alone til something actually screws up with it lol

Pretty much. Fan control would be a good idea if you have an electric fan.

 

I gotta clutch fan but want to swap to electrics.
