Biggest convertor?

There is a guy at my work selling his edge racing 9.5 inch converter. He says it stalls at 3500rpm in his 400 hp 350sbc. I am thinking this is going to make the stall too high for my application but wanted to check here first. He is asking 300 but I think I could get it for 250 from him. What would the stall be for me? like 3800? Is that too high for me?

Here is the set-up thus far (hoping for around 450 at the crank):

385ci with a eagle rotating assembly (steel crank and hyper pistons) SCR of 10.12 to 1
186 heads fully ported and polished and deshrouded to 66 cc's from 58cc to 60 cc depending on the chamber.
Full roller rockers, comp cams push rods, and trw guide plates.
RPM air gap manifold
holley 750dp
Comp Cams XE284-10 cam- .507/.510 lift and 240 int./246 exh. @.050
MSD distributor
and shorty heddmans for now that will become long tubes later when I get back to the lower 48 states.

I am also going to be regearing the car, probably to 3.73. gears.
Would also like to run a 100 shot on the motor next season.

Here is a piece of his ad on craigslist.

"I have a 9.5" 3500 stall, high effecency torque converter capable of handling 1000 hp. It was custom biult for my old 350 chevy (400 hp) and really made it come alive. If for some reason you are unhappy with its behavior or you change your vehicle setup it can be rebuilt (reflashed) by Edge Racing for minimal cost and made to perfectly match your engine combination. Attached is a picture of it next to an old B&M converter so you can see the size and weight difference (less reciprocating weight)."

Re: Biggest convertor?

A converter will stall at different speeds depending on how much torque is put into it. Stalling at 3500 behind a 400 may only stall at 3300 behind a 350.

That camshaft needs a converter that stalls around 2800-3000 for street or street/strip use. For all out race, a converter stall speed of 3300-4000.

That converter may not be a perfect choice but will probably work fine.
