rearend

what hp/tq levels are dangerous for the stock 10 bolts in the third gens. the car has a 700R with a 2800 converter, and the rear gear in my car i believe is a 2.83. also is there anyway to beef up the rear end to withstand more power. i know i can drive around with the current setup with the engine i am putting in it, but im afraid to really get on it because i dont think the rear end will hold for long if i do. here is basically the setup that i have.

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ne/index1.html

there are a several parts that are different, but all the parts that make power are basically the same. i have the vortec heads, and the same cam they used, the 1.6 rockers, and i have the 750cfm carb. the only things that might make a little difference is that my block is only .030 over where theres is .060. and my headers are 1 5/8 where they used
1 3/4.

Re: rearend

At that power level you should be fine, but if you want to beef it up the same things you would do to any other rearend would work. Have the axle tubes welded up change the gear and dif to better ones and use a solid pinion spacer instead of a crush sleeve. Buy a aluminum dif cover that has the preload screws in it for the caps. There is also an axle shaft kit that will work on some covers to help strengthen the rear axle tubes.

That still is your problem and being dumb enough to think a stock rear will be all right.

Re: rearend

Guys: Different subject need some help. I have an 87 Z with a standard 5 speed and 305 TPI. The garage guys say the rear axle at 179,000 miles should be replaced. Will the rear end from an 1988 IROC with automatic trans and 350 TPI work on my 87? I am not so much worried about performance gain or loss, just trying to keep my old girl on the road....

It would be a direct bolt in if the price is right. Could be a 2:77 or 3:27 9-bolt but that is a guess right now.
