Engine removal with convertor attached??

I am getting ready to remove a seized 305 engine from a 92 Trans AM. The crank will not turn at all to allow me to remove the flexplate to convertor bolts. Can I pull the engine with the convertor attached while the tranny is still in place? Is there enough clearance to move the engine forward enough to clear the shaft?? Should I just pull them together and separate them outside the car. I was originally trying to leave the trans in.

Thanks

I just did this in March; a friend melted his 2.8 into a lump, and we switched it for a junkyard 2.8. As we lifted the engine up, we also lifted the trans up (floor jack under the trans pan with a piece of wood in between). When the engine cleared the motor mounts, the engine swung forward, and took the convertor with it. We removed the radiator and a/c condensor to prevent damage- good thing, because the engine swung into the radiator support. We then had to use a sawzall to cut the flywheel to get at one of the flexplate-to-torque-convertor bolts.

I think if you remove the radiator and a/c condensor (or swing the condensor out of the way), the v8 will clear. Just remember to lift the trans up as you lift the engine up. You might have to pull the distributor (and maybe the entire intake?) out to get some extra clearance at the firewall.

I have pulled 4 V-8 engines from these cars and every single time it only took about 15 minutes to ubolt the flexplate and torque converter. There are only three bolts between the flexplate and torque converter.

Thanks guys...I'll just yank the engine with convertor...hopefully I can disassemble it enough to get the crank to turn after its out.

Thanks again!

I like to pull the engine and tranny from the car as a single unit, then unbolt the bellhousing and pull the trans away, and finally unbolt the converter from the flexplate. But, a friend of mine that works at a F**D dealership, said that screws up the front pump seal.. YMMV
