How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

Rather than pay $700 for a new posi from 9bolt.com I'm about to order a mini spool. The car enjoys more street driving than it does strip, and its turbo'd with about 500 horsepower and I'm afraid the posi is gonna kerplop after one launch... What do you guys think? Do you think the mini spool is a good idea? Btw I dont have ANY money to spend on 12 bolts or 9"'s lol

Mini spool on a primarily street driven car.....On every turn, one tires is gonna squeal in every turn, since they'll be forced to turn at the same rate, despite their different turning radius.

Not sure how successful that will be over the long run.

How long do you think a posi would last, I heard that 9 bolt posi's are weak because they are cone type, and I'd rather not have to rebuild it after every trip to the track...

Funny.....I've always heard the 9-bolts were a bit stronger than the 10-bolts & those were the ones always breaking. Try a 10-bolt behind 500 HP.

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

I was watching video's on youtube with ppl using a mini spool or full spool and they didnt seem to chirp or squeal that much, maybe it was just the audio, but are we talking like the whole car is gonna hop or just a small chirp?

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

You could get the later 10-bolt (90+ I think it is) & put in a 4th gen posi unit.

I think the biggest/weakest problem with 3rd gen units is the posi unit, more so that the c-clip axles (which 9-bolts don't have).

Seems like either the center goes out or the c-clip sections of the axles brake & the axle shaft slides out. At least a 9-bolt is like a 9".....If the axle, at least it doesn't slide out of the housing.

Closest I've had is a locker on my old Jeep.

Cornering with rock-style lugged tires turns were.....interesting.....on the street if they were locked. Inside tires was grabbing & slipping/hopping on pavement. They like to go the same speed, so the Jeep preferred to keep going straight. Not a BIG problem, just a litle extra resistance to turning.

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

Oh I see, that shouldnt be a problem as I dont take many sharp turns, I like to take extra wide turns to prevent my stupid power steering belt from hopping off. Summit says mini spools are good for circle track racing too, so I'll probably end up nascaring my car, alright thanks for the info

Any year 10-bolt will accept the fourthgen limited slip, but 28-spline axles must be used.

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

A spool or mini spool should never be used in a street car. I have seen too many parts break from the use of a spool on the street. I have seen axles break and all of the studs break, along with cracked wheels. Spools are dangerous on the street. The mini spool is made for dirt track racing and a spool is made for drag racing. Neither are for street use.

The 9 bolt posi is a Borg Warner unit. It has 4 pinion gears instead of the 2 pinion gears that all other Camaro rear ends have. This makes it stronger than the others. They hold up well as long as you don't do many burnouts while holding the brakes. This will damage any posi.

Not an issue with disc brakes It's not the best thing to put your caliper and bracket's through but atleast you wont lose the wheel and axel, or tear up the fender.

If the studs or wheel break then the axle and brake caliper aren't going to matter. I've seen both happen.

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

and i work with a guy that has run a full spool in his daily driven truck for over 5 years without a problem. yes the tires will squeal a little turning, and despite popular opinion spools, either kind, are safer on the street (in rain/ice/snow) than true lockers. all experiences will vary. and different people think differently about streetable and what is the best road to take. I say if you want to run a minispool, then by all means have fun.

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

And if you put 1 bullet in a 6 shot revolver and put it to your head and pull the triger you have a 5 in 6 chance that you won't kill your self. Or a 1 in 6 chance that you will. What if the person that you kill isn't you, but the person in the car that is coming at you in the other lane? A spool is dangerous in a street car. Maybe your friend with the truck hasn't broke anything YET. I've seen the broken parts. I know that it happens. Maybe not to everyone, but what if you are the one that it happens to next?

Re: How do you guys feel about a mini spool in a 9 bolt

all that and nothing was said about my rundown on the streetability of a spool vs. a locker. and i never said that it wasnt without risks, but i know plenty of people that do it. i'm not sure that its as risky as russian roulette though.
