Lost reverse. Need advice
My tranny just took a dump on me. The reverse was working on and off for the passed 2 days. Now it just doesnt engage. 1,2,3, and 4th work just fine. What should I look for? What are common causes of losing reverse?

Far too kind guys, far too kind. Thanks. Reverse came back for some reason. I would like to thank everyone who viewed this thread and didnt even reply.
Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
I been looking at your post several times to try and gain some knowledge on trannys so I am at fault.Have you tried to adjust your cable, what about fluid/filter??There are about a coupla dozens things that could cause this from my knowledge. You say u have a trans from a corvette,so it is a used trans with how many miles??has it been rebuilt before?shift kit ? the list goes on and on.I am by no means an expert but have tore down and built a coupla trans.just try to help when I can.Your 2-3 shift valve could be stuck, the reverse boost valve could be sticking or have some debris in it.again there are another dozen or so parts that could cause this.

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
Kaycee, thanks for replying bud. Fluid is at recommended level. Its a rebuilt from Transmission Trans-Plant. I only had it for 4 months. I got a 2 year warranty on it but im in a bind here. I called multiple times for them to come and pickup the core. The service rep told me yes, yes, ok, ok, and ok. But after about 5 calls, I just gave up. They never charged me a core and so I got 2 tranny's. Im thinking about keeping the original just as a spare but that one just has 1st, 3rd, and reverse. Ohhh, the tv cable is properly adjusted, no shift kit, and all except reverse work good.

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
I don't know trans either, other than check fluid on a regular basis &
change fluid & filter once a year. We only drive ours during the pre-snow time, so I don't have any helpful info.
I hope this doesn't cost you big $ !!

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
Well my plan is to drop the tranny and do the rebuild myself. I dont really trust anybody. I mean damb, it's a rebuild and reverse fails in 6 months. Thats not acceptable for me. The best way to know that it's done correctly is for me to do it myself.
Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
the only thing I can recommend is tht chilton repair manual and other specialty manuals maybe some that specialize with transmissions. I'm thinking about doing the same. my trans messed up n i too am having trouble finding help from this forum its cool tho.. good luck bud!

Hey man good luck to you too. Yeah man, nobody was helping me out either. I had to bump mine up 2 times. I guess the tranny section aint that popular here in this board.
Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
Just saw your thread.
Check your shift cable underneath the car. Make sure it's secure and not getting loose. Since you checked your fluids that's not the issue. I'm assuming it's a 700r4?

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
I would get the ATSG manual that is what I use for my rebuild manual have not used the Haynes wonder if it any better than there motor manual. That is what cable I was refering to the shift linkage for the console shifter. It wouldn't hurt to replace filter/ fluid after rebuild allso GOOD Luck

If you still have your old trans , I would say tear that one apart and rebuild that one . Just make sure the trans place does not drop in one day for thier core

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
Thats what Im afraid of that one day the tranny asks for the core. Even if i was to keep the old one, I wouldnt use it because it is of the older type, and the one on the Camaro right now (no reverse) has the updated auxillary valve body. Shift cable is also new and secure.

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
I've been looking--
I got jack-slapped in the forehead!! I KNOW I've read it but can't find it--
a member lost reverse, & someone suggested the torque converter.
I can't f**n remember why a torque converter!!
camaroiroc88350 made the same suggestion I would've after I read his thread.
The only other thing that I can think is if the select lever on the trans isn't " clicking ", like maybe something is worn out or rounded off, like a worn tooth??
Sorry, I just don't know how to say what I'm thinking because I don't know too many terms!!
( edit )
I think it's safe to say you're going to " trans-plant " your business elsewhere??!!??

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
you got that right. No more Trans-Plant for me. Well the torque converter does just that, coverts engine torque to drive the turbine which is engaged with the input shaft that runs through the tranny and inserts into the driveline Thats all the converter does, I think
. I could be wrong though.
Not a tranny kind of guy.
Did I make myself sound stupid
.
HAHAHA. any way, I gotta go to sleep. Gotta go to work at 3:30 am at Target. Sucks. See ya tomorrow my friends.

Re: Lost reverse. Need advice
If you have forward gears it's not the Torque Converter. If it were bad you wouldn't have 1st either.
It could be the sunshell, which means tearing into the transmission. Not too hard, but can be a pain and kinda daunting.
When I first got my rebuild done, mine drove fine in 1,2,3,4 but had no reverse. Turned out to be the Boost valve in the front pump. Sometimes if the snap ring isnt in all the way it pushes out and you loose reverse.

If you pull the pan off, you can see this. Its the hole right next to your filter hole, should have a piston about 1" back with a snap ring on it. If you're changing your fluid/filter i would check that too.
The not "clicking" of the shift selection cable is either the gear in the console or the transmission itself. They both have a little gear with "notches" and a roller. Pretty simple:

There is one in the transmission pan area. it should be pretty obvious. Check both of those and make sure they are clicking properly. You can just turn it by hand to check if you pull the pan/drain the fluid.

Could that be the case in my situation (Boost valve )? Thread
