Speedo/drive cable problem
82 camaro 350 5.7 carbed 700r4 tranny.. mech speedo...when i got the car the speedo didnt work... checked the drive cable and it looked like crap, had to dig the end out of the tranny basically because it was sheared off...so i replaced it with a new one... back it out.. and same damage, drive cable sheared off in the tranny housing...only thing i can think of is the cruise control transducer end isnt spinning like its supposed to, but the transducer itself i dont think is even hooked up.. chain isnt hooked up to the servo assembly, the cruise controls were ripped out of the interior so no switches or anything.. any ideas on a simple fix, i would really like to get the speedo working.

Re: Speedo/drive cable problem
If you don't care about cruise, get a speedo cable for an 84 and bypass the cruise transducer.
I don't know about the 82 speedo, but later mech. speedos have a VSS built into the back of them which feeds the ECM and the cruise. If you're not running an ECM, this is not an issue.

Re: Speedo/drive cable problem
thanx for the quick reply, will have to try that out, my question, is would the ratios be the same by bypassing the cruise, and why a cable from an 84? i know alot of parts are interchangeable but i dont understand why youve specified a cable for an 84.

Re: Speedo/drive cable problem
84 may have been the last year for the transducer, I'm unsure, but what jmd is suggesting, I think, is a one-piece speedo cable (which would bypass the transducer altogether). The one piece won't affect the speedo's reading.

Re: Speedo/drive cable problem
82-83 had the engine bay cruise transducer on many GM vehicles. 84 Camaros do not.
90-up (I think) Camaros had electric speedo.
So we can now choose from 84-89.
Also, there are a different speedo cables for different powertrains. One thing I found is that a new 1-piece speedo cable for a low gear ratio (2.73 etc) G-body causes some speedo wavering in my original 3.73 G-body. I didn't know this until after the fact; obviously I wish I had purchased the 2pc cable.
The 3.73 rear was available in 84-85 for sure.
That's why I would buy a speedo cable for an 84-85 3.73 rear geared L69 700-R4 Camaro in your case. It may or may not be 2pc. It will work fine if you have 2.41 gears and it will work fine if you have 4.11 gears. It will be for the right trans as well.
That's why I said 84.
