axle compatability

Ok I have an 88 gta which I have put a 96 firebird formula rear end in, its a 6 speed 3.42 rear end, well the axle is bent. My brother has a rear end out of a 1999 v6 5 speed camaro. Are those axles interchangeable?

Re: axle compatability

Maybe but those are both fourth gen axles. GM may have changed the axle length during the production run. There's a good chance they're identical, but you'll have to research fourth gen axle lengths.

If you're asking about the entire differential, yes they can be swapped.

Re: axle compatability

Yea just the axle, the part where it unclips from the differential and slides out. I wasn't sure because I heard the lt1 cars rear end was a,little wider than the newer fourth gens. He said his was a 28 spline, this is my dd so I have to get it fixed quick. If their interchangeable then I just have to go get it and put it in.

Re: axle compatability

All the 10 bolt axles starting in 1990 are 28 spline.

Just did a quick internet search.

93-96 f-bodies use 32-1/8" axles
98-02 f-bodies use 32" axles

I have no idea why there isn't a listing for 97 but the difference between the 96 and 99 is 1/8" which means it's probably not advisable to do a swap. You can always ask on a fourth gen site if such a swap exchange is possible.

Re: axle compatability

When you get post 96 axles some may be traction control while 93-96 will not be. I did alot of searching for my axle swap and many companies recommended the same pn#'s for any year - difference was the TC's vs. non-TC. If you have TC axle, ensure you replace w/ TC compatible axles, otherwise any non-TC will do. I had no problem w/ my axle swap for a post96 non-TC rear.
