Just picked up a 85 Z28 a week ago and today I drove about a mile and everything was fine. Came out and she wouldnt shift out of 1st-tried overdrive and drive and when I shifted into reverse or drive the car would slam into gear. I went to the Px to pick up some tranny fluid thinking it might be low but when I came back out she went through all the gears just fine. I then went a few miles to autozone to pick up a tranny filter and all the way there and back I had no issues.
Any ideas? Is this a sign my tranny is about to go?
Im going to change the filter and change my fluid. How much fluid does just the transmission take?

6 quarts for the transmission plus 2 for the torque converter. Also I have found that mine is sensitive to correct fluid level. Check when at normal operating temperature, shift through all gears before checking, check in park. If the engine is running warm, you will see the effect from thermal expansion of the trans fluid.

Autozone told me 12 qts with the torque converter. Anyone have a Haynes manual or owners manual with the fluid capacities listed?

Total capacity should be around 12 quarts.

It is a TH700R4 correct?

Add a small amount at a time and check it.

Autos are very sensitive to fluid level and you can quickly burn one up without enough fluid in it.

If you are doing a pan drop on the trans, you will probably only get 5 or 6 quarts out. The rest is in the torque convertor, cooler lines and internal passages.
