Turbo 400 severely limiting speed.

Had to install a th400 in place of my broken t5 due to funds. Works well except the tourqe converter and the transmisson were out of an old 78 Chev pickup. Once I hit 90k on the highway in 3rd its reving too high to cruise at.
.. I have the cash for a swap or rebuild. Can I get the 400 pulled and rebuilt with a kit for better top end, or am I better off swapping transmissions completley. Id like something capable of handling 400 hp with no issues and being able to hit 180km/h min before i run out of gear, this current setup tops at around 130! . Tranny and converter were just grabbed in a hurry from a part yard when cash was tight. Can spend up to $4000 if I have to. 406 SBC 750 Holley Est. 400HP 87 IROC. Thanks for any ideas guys!

Re: Turbo 400 severely limiting speed.

Another issue you might have is your rear diff ratio. I know they are usually higher in manual 3rd gens. It's something else you might have to look into.

Re: Turbo 400 severely limiting speed.

Nothing wrong with the trans. You just now have 3 gears and unlocked converter instead of overdriven manual trans or a 4 sd auto overdrive with locked converter. With too much rear gear in the differential, you will have high rpms with th400. Nothing you can do with the trans but can change rear differential. Or go 700r4 for an automatic like the other thirdgen cars had.
