10-bolt rear end limit?
i wanted to know if i can still use the 10 bolt i currently have. 1st i'll start off by saying the 10-bolt will be fitted with moser 28-spline c-clip axle's, moser's performance girdle(cover) and ring and pinion(3.73) from richmond and an auburn pro series differential. Now the powerplant will be a 406ci making around 600hp, the car currently weighs 3400lbs with the stock 305 in it right now when i swap in the 406 i will be putting a tubular k-member & upper and lower a-arms plus a fiberglass hood so im hoping the weight will go down to around 3250-3300lbs. Now the car WILL be my DAILY DRIVER and i will be running slicks when at take it to the track every weekend. Just wondering if the 10-bolt with those upgrades will be able to handle that. any information is greatly appreciated you guys are the experts here

First of all scrap the Auburn idea. It's junk and it will not work for long when doing burnouts. Go with the Eaton Posi, Eaton Truetrac, Torsen or Yukon Dura Grip. A Detroit Locker would be best for drag racing, but you might not like it for every day driving.
The 7.5 10 bolt will not hold up well with slicks and 600 HP. You will most likely break it and all of the money you spent on it will be wasted.

I ran a beefed up 10 bolt down into the low 11's before swapping it out for a 9". No matter how much money you invest into trying to make it better, the tiny ring and pinion teeth will still be the part that fails first. Mine didn't fail but every time I launched, there was a chance it could have failed. At the time, I was making around 500 hp to the wheels.
A big power upgrade isn't just about the engine, the rest of the driveline also needs to handle the extra power. If you're building enough power that the tiny stock diff isn't going to handle it, prepare to invest more money into a real diff that can. A 9" and 12 bolt are the most common but a Dana 60 is also available.
You can invest in one diff now or break the invested money of a 10 bolt then invest in a better diff later. No matter what you do, the 10 bolt will eventually fail. You're just rolling the dice as to when.

I may be one of luckier people with 10 bolts. I've well into the 9's on a stock 00 trans am 10 bolt.
Been 10's on another with spray, 1.41 60 ft.
I say find a 4th gen version with a zexel torsen diff and 3.42 gears. Run it as is no upgrades because it would be a waste.
Autos with a converter shouldnt hurt it that bad. Save for a new rear.

You are not going to find a 12 bolt, or any other factory built rear end that will fit. You are going to have to go to the after market for a good rear end upgrade. Moser Engineering, Strange and some others make bolt in rear ends in 9 inch, 12 bolt and 60 for the 3rd gen. Quick Performance probably has the lowest cost bolt in 9 inch.

These are photos of the 10 Bolt ring and pinion next to the very popular Ford 9in. ring and pinion.
A lot of track cars including our Third Gens are using a modified version of the Ford 9in. in there cars and by looking at these photos you can see why.
By the way, I did "Up Grade" my 10 Bolt for my 5.0, automatic but its my DD and will never see a track or slicks.
Here's a link to the build thread. = https://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/t...de-photos.html
