700r4 1st gear shifts late and slow

Okay first off I have no Knowledge of how transmissions work or anything I am new to this.

Ever since I owned my 1990 3.1 firebird 700r4 138k on the engine, it always seemed first gear shifted hard. I thought this was normal but I tend to notice it takes too long to shift when I step on it.

I tried testing my 0-60 time tonight and according to the internet it does it in 9.4 seconds. I floored it and it took over 12 seconds. it stayed in first gear till 40mph and stayed at 40 for at least two and a half seconds before jumping hard into second. Even when I dont floor it it seems to shift this hard out of first. Is this normal? When I shift the gears manually it goes through them as soon as i move the shifter, no lag. Any help would be appreciated. I also Plan on doing an L98 swap next winter but I would like to improve it if I can.

If you're planning on a V8 swap, don't bother with the transmission that's in there now.

The V8 won't bolt up to a V6 transmission because the bolt patterns are different between the V6 and V8 engine blocks.

If the engine/trans combo you got at the swap meet didn't come out of a 3rd Gen, don't get rid of the original V6 drive train until you're done with the V8 swap.

You'll at least need to swap the extension housings between the V6 and V8 transmissions in order to have a place to bolt the torque arm to.
