GM rebuilt 700R4 questions/ Identification.

I have a trans I traded for a few years ago, saving it for a future project, and the Z28 I ran across it that project.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...nd-87-z28.html

It is a GM rebuilt unit, with low miles. I have looked up the year and it's an 87, but I don't know how to decipher the other tag from the rebuild.

While it's out, I want to put the upgraded Transgo shift kit from Pro Built Automatics in it, a upgraded sun shell, and maybe a better band. I'm not going to go crazy with the engine, so I don't want to build this for 600hp, just maybe up to the 350hp neighborhood.

Here are some pics of the case and the tag, if anyone can tell me what GMs rebuild tag means, and is it an early or late 87?

Thanks!

Scott

Sorry about the sideways photos. They are correctly oriented on my computer.........

Re: This isn't Gospel.....

Can't help you with the tag. The only meaningful thing on the tag is probably the "2CH". The "M7" is most likely just:

M = 700R4
7 = 1987

The partial ID stamp: 7FAM124B

7 = Model Year = 1987
FA = Model
M = 700R4
124 = Julian Date = May 4th 1987
B = 1st Shift

I say "partial" ID because it doesn't look like a typical production stamping. Probably because it's a GM Rebuild? Typical ID stamp should look like:

7YWMY12345678123A

7 = Model Year
YW = Model
M = 700R4
Y = Assembly Plant (Toledo)
12345678 = Serial Number
123 = Julian Date
A = Shift (A & B = 1st shift; C & H = 2nd shift)

As far as an early or late '87 700R4 you'd probably have to look inside and compare what you're seeing with an expert. My notebook of references that I collected back in 1989 or 1990 show most desirable factory improvements had been done by February 1987. There might be more that was done after this date.

06-19-1986: New lo/rev roller clutch assembly.
07-17-1986: New forward clutch assembly; new pan with square magnet.
10-06-1986: Aux Valve Body and fluid passage changes.
10-28-1986: 10 vane pump.
01-27-1987: New Aux Valve Body accumulator cover.
02-09-1987: Improved reverse engagement shift feel.

But just going by the ID stamp, I'd say yours is a late '87 (model year typically starts in Sept. 86), lag in getting changes to the production line notwithstanding.

Re: GM rebuilt 700R4 questions/ Identification.

Yes, it is an original 1987, but is has been rebuilt by GM (Serta). So it should not have the early type one valve body. Depending on when it was rebuilt, it should have a few of the later 700R4 parts in it. The one thing odd here is that when GM does a rebuild (Serta), they always remove the original ID on the side.

I was wondering what the deal was with the old numbers on the side. I looked them up last week, but just found the same info. I was hoping the green tag might have some info that would clear it up.

It was rebuilt around 2003 or so I think. The number on the pump is the late model 700/4L60 pump, 8682132, from what I can find.

I don't remember what the valve body looks like, I will post a pic of it tonight or tomorrow. Maybe that will shed some light on what I need to buy for a shift kit from you and upgrades.

Thanks all for the help!!

Here is a pic of the valve body, if I am correct, I believe this is the latest valve body.

Thanks!

Upgrade parts I'm considering..........

Here are the upgrade parts I'm considering getting from Dana, since the trans is lo miles and rebuilt from GM. It there anything else someone would recommend? The car isn't a daily driver, but I will have to drive it to Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. All three are an hour away.
