700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

I recently purchased a Street\Strip kit from Dana at Pro-Built Automatics. Most of the directions were pretty intuitive, but I've found myself hung up during reassembly. It looks like I was provided with 6 torlon check *****, and sure enough the instructions show where all 6 of them should go.

However, it didn't mention what to do about the other check *****. I'm assuming I put the steel ones back in where I didn't install the torlon *****, but I wasn't sure.

Does anyone know off the top of their head by chance?

Edit: Another question. Instructions indicate that I should plug a hole below the 1-2 accumulator. The hole that is to be plugged has a check ball (or so it looks like) in it that doesn't budge at all. There might be a lip there that I need to file down to get it out, but I haven't tried that yet. Anyways, in the directions, it says to plug the hole and leave the piston and spring out... But I was provided with a new piston, shaft, and seal. No new spring. Do I leave it out, or replace the piston and seal and reuse the old spring?

Thanks in advance!
Mike

Definitely call Dana and leave him a message. His after sales service is top notch!! As for the check *****, I only put in what his sheet illustrates. As for the plugs, I may be forgetting because it was last year, but I don't recall pulling any check ***** out first.

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

In theory, that would be the best idea, but unfortunately I just don't have the time to call him and I likely wouldn't be able to pick up a call from him. My life is just too hectic unless it's after 10PM or on a Sunday.

Which is why I came to you fine folks. There's always a chance he'll see this, too.

Dana has been known to speak to people during mid-late evenings. And he's Pacific time. So your best chances of talking to him would probably be 10PM Minnesota time.

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

The only other checkball that I can think of here is the 5/16" "copper colored" checkball that was in the case below the TV bell crank. The other accumulator piston is for the forward accumulator (aux. valve body). You install the two steel shims in the spring cover for the forward accumulator to bring back the spring tension that it loses over the years. Where you install the solid plug in the case in the 4th accumulator bore, is for eliminating the 4th accumulator. Therefore no need for a piston, pin, spring assembly here. I hope this helps.

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

Hi Dana,

Thanks for the call and your post here. The reason I ask about the check *****, is because there's a ton of them that were in here.

Here's what I'm looking at.

Just to confirm, all of these should be removed and just put the 4 torlon ***** in?

This was included, which I thought went below the plate. This should be installed in the aux valve body instead?

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

According to the case, 1987. It has the aux valve body, etc. It also looks as if it were rebuilt at some point, as it had new looking Alto clutches, the band looked really good, fluid was relatively clean, etc.

Which kit did you get from me? Was it for the late 1987 valve body? Let me know asap?

I did order the later model street\strip kit. I'm guessing I ordered the wrong one? Shoot.

Long story short, I have the wrong valve body. Once I source the correct part, I should be back in business. Thanks everyone!

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

Just to update, it turns out I had the early 87 valve body instead of the late 87-91 valve body. All fixed and ready to go now.

I'm still having trouble getting that check ball out. Any tips? It's almost like the check ball was slightly larger than the hole. I *think* it spins though. It's hard to tell. I'll try and find a picture.

Red circle indicates the check ball I'm talking about, if I remember right. It's one of the two, lol. I don't have the instructions with me at the moment. Also, once this is plugged I am to leave the spring and piston out. I'm guessing this just leads to a bit of a firmer shift?

With the white circle, there was a larger check ball in that location. I think Dana said I could leave that one there if it came with it, but I just wanted to verify that was the case.

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

The hole that is plugged, needs to be plugged permanently. It is the feed hole for the 4th accumulator. "Only" leave out the spring, piston, pin and seal, "if" this hole is blocked off. Yes, this makes for a quicker 3-4 shift at all throttle openings. The check ball in the "white circle" should be a 1/4" / .250" checkball. The larger checkball is not used with the late style valve body (Type II). Only 1/4" / .250" checkballs used with the late style valve body (Type II).

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

Just to confirm, I should leave the steel check ball in there and let it act as the plug rather than trying to remove it and install the plug you provided in the kit?

Once again, thank you for all of your help Dana. I appreciate it!

Re: 700R4 Street\Strip Kit - Torlon Check Ball Question

One, you won't be able to get it out. And if you did, the hole would most likely be too big for the plug. Just make sure the aluminum is staked over the checkball. I install the checkball there, it works as well as the plug.
