Planning on buying from Hawks Motorsports, need some confidence

Hello, I have an 88 Iroc with the 9bolt Borg Warner rear end.
Recently I had gotten into a little accident and toasted my driverside axle shaft.
I see that Hawks has the 9 bolt, with the rear disc option.

I am wondering if I am actually going to be getting what I am buying, and if this will be a seamless install, because I am just gonna replace both.

Also, what can I check in terms of the actual differential to tell if I damaged it.

The bulk of the damage was on the driver side rear, the panhard bar got toasted, and the driver axle plate was bent.

However the sway bar was still straight, I plan on dissembling the differential tonight, but it would be good to know what to look for before I jump the gun on this purchase.

Thanks in advance!

So are you replacing both the axle shafts or the entire rear end?

You don't need to disassemble the differential to remove the axle shafts. They are factory bolt-in style.

You should get new wheel bearings and seals.

All the 9 bolts use the same axle shafts as far as I'm aware. If Hawke's has axle shafts that's as good a place as any. They are very reputable, if a little on the expensive side.

I am replacing both axle shafts, and I believe Hawks includes new bearings and seals.

I was going to disassemble the differential to look for damage. Or do you think it would be fine?

Well I suppose that depends on what happened exactly, and how severe. If we are talking a mildly bent axle shaft then probably no damage was done. You'll probably be able to tell when you take out the axle - if the slide in and out of the spline easily then it's unlikely there's any damage. And if there is damage then there are some decisions to make regarding how you want to proceed as parts for the Auburn style diff in the 9 bolt are hard to come by, and that diff is a horrible design so it may be time for an upgrade.

I'm sort of a noob, would you mind explaining to me how to actually remove the axle from the spline?

After removing the wheel, brake caliper, and rotor, you remove the 4 retaining bolts and either give it a few taps with a dead blow, or use a slide hammer with a hub puller. It's not difficult. Being a nOOb you will want to get axles that have new bearings and seals already installed or have that done at a machine shop. The bearings themselves are not nOOb friendly.

Appreciate it, thanks a lot man!

And I am fairly certain the Hawks axles come with new seals and bearings so I would be clear there.

Thanks again!

No worries. Post back how it goes. I got neck deep in my 9 bolt so I guess I'm one of the resident experts. They have an undeserved bad reputation for being difficult. It's actually just that all the US ones imported for the F body have the really crappy Auburn cone style LSD and until fairly recently there wasn't really any way to replace them with something better.

There is a good chance I am gonna have to replace my cones, as I was getting the one wheel peel before the accident anyhow.

What kind of replacement are you talking about and what does the installation procedure entail?

I saw somewhere that there is a place out in Cali that is importing or manufacturing some good parts for our 9 bolts. Too bad I can't remember who it was though!
