700r4 not shifting out of 1st
Hey guys new to this site and in advance thank yall for the info.
I have a 1989 Chevy C1500 700R4 automatic that won't shift beyond 1st gear. The only 2 working gears are REVERSE and 1ST, they don't slip or anything and the fluid is a nice red color and doesn't smell burned to even the slightest amount the level is also good. With that said, what should be the things that i should try or look for?

This site is dedicated to 82-92 Camaros and Firebirds. I don't know how much is the same between Camaros and c1500 trucks.
I'm no trans expert so I don't know if they are the same.

yu might have chewed up the plastic gear conected to the governor assembly. it is on the drivers side of the trans, you can remove the cover, wiggle out the governor, and check the plastic gear on the end of it. if it looks chewed up, that means it is not making contact with the gear on the transmission output shaft, so the governor is not spinning. when it doesnt spin, it wont allow the car to advance in forward gears.

Thank you I'll take a look at that. I look online for similar simptions for other 700R4's and some people were talking about changing some pressure switch, does that also sound right?

As IROCZman15 posted, check the governor gear. Very common failure.
The only other scenario I can think of is that the TV cable is no longer connected. However, get into the throttle enough and the trans will have late and hard shifts. But will up shift.

Re: 700r4 not shifting out of 1st
I've owned 2 700R4s that worked fine,... then only had 1st and reverse. 1 was in a Camaro and the other in a S10 Blazer, both were toast and need a rebuild. ( The S10 Blazer tranny died like that while on a highway off-ramp,...slowed to a crawl on the off-ramp, tranny shifted down into first and never caught second gear ever again ! )
While it could be something "minor" ( TV cable not connected or broken, bad governor gear, ect, ) if your trannys got over 150K,... it MIGHT be time for a full rebuild.
