Speedo Gears problems!
I changed my speedometer gears today and had a few problems. The first problem that I had was that the clip that holds the “drive” gear on the output shaft broke. I went to the dealer and they said they don’t make that clip anymore so I just put on the “drive” gear on without the clip. It work or for like 5 min and now my speedometer doesn’t work. Where can I buy that clip???
The second problem was when I took off the old gear on the speedometer cable and put the new one on it slid to close to the sleeve on the rod. The old gear sat toward the end of the rod, the new one sits as close to the sleeve as possible.

thanks "coxy". Has anyone experienced my other problem with the gear that goes on the shaft that connects to the speedometer cable, where the gear slides to far back on the rod? It's hard to explain. So I here illustration:
How original gear sat onthe rod:

How new yellow gear slides back:

I think this is the problem that the gear is just sliding to far back. Anyone have this problem?

There have been over the years many different combinations of speedo gears for various xmissions all using color coding. Sounds like you might have the right color gear but not for the right tranny. I would think that the different position on the "rod" would be an issue.
You definitely will need a working clip on the output shaft!
What level of competence does the local dealer's parts department have?

WHats up?
I had a problem with my 3.73 speedo gears sliding in the direction of the trans after installing it. Even with the clip installed, the gear on the output shaft continued to slide toward the trans side of the output shaft TRANNY SIDE EXPLANATION= ( when u take the tail section of the tranny down & put the gear on the tip of the output shaft. The gear is starting off at the drive shaft side & u are pushing it towards the tranny. I hope that clears up the "TRANNY SIDE") Most of the time when the gear moves out of place some of the teeth get damaged so u will have to buy another set. I solved the problem by making sure the clip was installed in the right direction & checking to see that the gear & clip had locked into place on the out put shaft( its a really snug fit so sometimes u may think thats its positioned right but its not so u have to be sure its locked.) hope this helps u out

HEY WAIT A SECOND!!!!! I just went to GM LAst week and ordered new speedo gears and THAT CLIP....Here was the ONLY issue I had...The GM Distribution center sells them in PACKS OF 10.... AND THEY CHANGED THE PART NUMBER.....Anyway the dude at the dealer who I always deal with called them up and they went ahead and shipped me 1 of each gear AND the CLIP....Sitting in my shop right now...
Sooo the parts are out there through GM but you need a service guy to take a little initiative to investigate what happened to it.... I paid 1 dollar and 15 cents for it...
MAybe I should just buy a 10 pack and sell them on here...LOL
Ill look for the Part number and post it if I can find my order slip...

Yeah I locked on to a killer one...He snagged me some GTA Badges after they were discontinued and supposedly all ALLOCATED through GM...He got a center console for me when they were/still are on NAtional Backorder panding a vendor agreement, he Hooks me up whenever possible......Hell he spent a week Finding a specific LONG SINCE DISCONTINUED Cable set for my 1987 GTA....He fudged a vin number from a car sold in 1992 through the dealership to Make GM give the last one up to me... Literally I heard the phone conversations viaspeakerphone... I cant say enough about the guy... AND because of that I only buy GM stuff from HIM... He has been invaluable with helping me Get all of these otherwise impossible to find parts....Tons of supposed discontinued stufffor my vette as well.
The dealer I used to go to would just say..."UHH THey dont make it anymore........NEXT"...Thats why (I dont make it anymore....OUT to that dealership that is...
