Don't You Hate It When You Lose Your Tranny on The Beltway???

Earlier today I was cruising on the beltway, coming back from school. I was doing about 70mph in OD. The tranny slipped, reved up to like 6000 rpm and within seconds went back into OD.

A few minutes later, when my turn comes up, I get in the right lane and shift it back into Drive. I got cut off and I braked. The tranny downshifted fine, but afterwards I would give it some gas and it would just rev and never shift into second! This was on the beltway, and I couldn't get above 25 mph!!!

I pulled the shifter back into 2nd manually and it shifted fine . I pulled over into a shopping center upon reaching my first exit I came to. I looked under the car, everything looked fine. Checked my tranny fluid, fine, didn't smell burn't at the time (I will check again).

I let it cool for a while, put it back into drive, and it shifted into 2nd ,but as I neared home, it did it again. It would slip back into first, rev like crazy but won't accelerate! It makes weird noise when it does this.

I get home, look in my haynes for possible cuases, but it wasn't any help. I drove to the post office, but this time I put it in OD and it drove fine all the way there. And I put it back into OD as I headed for work. About halfway to work It slipped back into first and would accelerate and only rev again! I pulled the shifter back into 2nd and it then accelerate, but as I got on the parkway i noticed it wouldn't shift into third either!

And thats where I am at now, at work, pondering over this problem!

Could the TV Cable maybe come loose, i couldn't tell if it did unless I raise it, which I will be doing once I get home.

I will post anymore details if Ican rember them...

What do you think could be cuasing this?

My 83 was plagued with shifting problems recently. What it turned out to be was one of the tabs on the TV Cable's adjustment broke off so when I would accelerate, the whole cable housing moved rather than the cable. However, I have the 3-speed trans and it didn't make a difference what gear it was in -- I was stuck in first until about 40mph

the noise is more of a screaching sound

tv cable seems fine, same with shift linkage

when im am driving, i can start in park, put it into "1", then rev up to 4000 rpm, shift into "2", rev up into 4000, put in into "D" and it will go into third but it won't go into Fourth...

OD won't shift into any gear...

Why can "D" go from 2nd to 3rd, but not 1st to 2nd ???

Tomorrow she will be going on a flat bed to AAMCO and the worst case scenio is if it needs to be rebuilt, im going to be sorry, but I'll just have to sell it for parts

Stuart.
It's tranny time.
You jump from 1, pass second onto third & fourth?
Band for the 1-2 shift is broken gripping action is nill.
Rebuild tranny about $400-$800.
It's a cheap cost to buy a working known car.
That happened to my S-10 tranny.
It's now fixed & cost $600.
Sorry

Just make sure that the AAMCO that your car is going to is a member of your local BBB. I almost got taken for a ride by a Cottman shop that was not a member and my neighbor actually picketed his local AAMCO due to shoddy workmanship. Neither were BBB members.

In a 700r4 The band is related for 2nd & Overdrive. You will always lose both of them at the same time. Can you install a tranny yourself? If so I would suggest calling these guys (Darrel Young Racing Transmissions) for a new heavy duty performance trans. Aamco will most likely charge you the same amount just to rebuild yours stock. Talk to Jimmy and he'll give you advice on options availible for your specific driving needs. You can Hammer these transmissions hard all day long. I have them in two of my cars, one for eight very hard years.http://www.racing-transmissions.com/main.htm

Well i was just stapped with a $2700 bill to get the tranny rebuilt, a new torque converter, and to finally fix that tranny mount.

That is unbelievably high!!!!

But I will be paying it as it is my best option, becuase I would put at least that into another car and whose to say that there won't be anything wrong with the new car. Besides I wouldn't be able to get more than a few hundred bucks from the camaro

That high price tag comes with a ONE YEAR, UNLIMITED mile warranty, which is nice.

So, I will be keeping the car, obviously becuase I WILL BE PAYING MORE FOR A D@MN TRANNY THAN I PAID FOR THE CAR!!! But I need to know that I have a reliable car to get to school and work. D@mn priorities :urg:

When they pulled the transmission pan off, and i saw the pitch black oil, i about freaked i just changed the stuff a month ago!

and only 1yr warranty? shop around. they obviously don't want your business.

edit: you can get a TCI tranny for less than that

2700 DOLLARS???? WTF ARE THEY SMOKING!!!!! I had the trans in my wife's 93 Buick Lesabre rebuilt with all of the upgrades (hardened reverse gear, better boost valve, etc) for 1650 and that included a new Torque Convertor, and a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty. That trans is also more complex than a 700R4 -- Mine was FWD, electronic, etc.

Call them immediately and have them park it outside... Get a boneyard trans or find a better shop -- These guys are evidently a bunch o' hillbillies out to rip people off!!!!!!

I had the exact same problem. I bought a junkyard tranny for $300 and had it installed for 200 and its lasted me about 14 months so far, and still running strong.

That's insane! I paid $450 to have a rebuilt 1 year warranty TH350 with new convertor into my '77 bird! They are SCREWING YOU OVER. And I bet they are enjoying it! I'd go the junkyard route, myself - or if you can spend that much, just get a new TCI Heavy Dty 700r4....

Well, I was too late. I called two hours after I left it there and they already had it pulled, taken apart, prepped and cleaned. They wanted to charge me $600 bucks just to walk away with the taken apart tranny in my backseat!!!

Since my step dad talked me into signing to let them do the work, he picked up the tab. I will be selling the car soon (was planning on doing that anyways) and will be giving him what i get for it and he'll call it even.

I got into a big mess and it will be a big loss for me, but I have all my "goodies" off of the car, and almost have it reverted back to stock.

My Dad is helping me find a daily driver so that I can have a reliable car for work and school.

Hopefully I might still be able to pay for a daily driver and continue to get enough money for next semester!

Getting another F-Body probably just got pushed back until next fall, but I got to worry about school first. It might be sooner if I can get a student loan...

This whole situation sucks, but I just had to cut my losses

Man those are some shady *** tranny guys down in your area. I had a similar problem at Cottman -- but it was only 325 (they didn't have it apart and it was "almost" out). I paid the tab and took my car to an independent shop. Total paid for my error was $1970 (1645 rebuild, 325 to Cottman). Maybe you should call your local BBB and file a complaint (gather info first) just to try to get a partial refund on the bill.

I know you were planning on selling the car but here are a few things to consider

1. You have a warranty on the tranny now --- why not take advantage of it? At least hold off on selling and replacing the car for a few months. Why? the warranty is non transferrable. If you sell the car and the tranny goes again, the buyers may come back and cause you additional headaches. If it gives out on you, you have it towed to AAMCO (but one that is a member of the BBB) and get it fixed.

2. The chances of recovering your loss/making enough for school are remote. If you sell the car, say for 2500 (probable) you can wipe the slate clean with your stepdad. Okay but you still need a reliable car to get to work and school. My estimate is that will run at least 3500. Now you need to pay for that car and school? things would be too tight IMHO.

Okay you owe your step dad 2700. Is it better to owe him 2700 or someone else (bank, car lot) 3500? If you pay that 3500 will you have to miss a semester? School should be top on the list NO MATTER WHAT.

Here's my advice

Stick with the 'maro. It may not be the dream car right now but how many people's college car is? I went through school with a 78 Dodge Aspen wagon. Dream Car? no (although I still have a soft spot for them)

Work out a payment plan with your step dad. Many times if family members lend you $$$ they won't charge interest as long as you pay them back in a timely manner.

I know the thought of something new is tempting -- many people get bored with their ride and harp on its limitations, flaws etc. Take a step back and look at the good points. Can you live with em for another year or two (or four)? If the answer is anything other than HELL NO, stick with the car. Don't mod it/spruce it up, don't add little options. Just keep it clean and maintain it until you have enough to get the new car/pay for school at the same time. If you graduate and start making big $$$ before then, go out and get a nice new 5th gen!!

Keep the ride. The advice is rather GREAT!
Not CUTTING LOOSES
Keeping above stream
Incidentially.
YOU WANT ALL PARTS REMOVED BACK TO YOU. CALL NOW!!!!!!!!!
Then take "those parts" & the bill to about 2-3 other shops.
Ask for a tranny rebuild cost from them, in writing.
Ask them if the "broken parts" (don't show them!) you know of, are included in the rebuild job or costing extra (factor into the estimate from this visited shop).
Get, honest, about 4-5 estimates.
Sue the original shop, in local small claims court, for the difference, called
GOUGING THE CUSTOMER!!!!
Or a simple lawsuit to obtained overcharge for the transmission repair bill.
TO MAKE THIS INCIDENT STICK, you NEED THE OWNERS NAME OF THE SHOP, NOT MANAGERS NAME. Can serve small claims court papers to owner at the business address.
Promise you'll get a court date & hearing with your evidence.
They $$$$$$$aw ya coming & leaving, with their hand$$$$$$$ in your pant$$$$$$.
No, it don't feel good.
Been there.
Sued.
Won
Collected claims.
BBB Does NOTHING ENFORCABLE. NOTHING.
Small Claims cases do that job.
OR Go on "Peoples Court!!"
You also get paid for TV Apperance as a TV Extra (about $150 or so!!!).
True,
I was appoached by that show once, as I was suing an old girlfriend for money she owed me!

PAY BY CHECK
THAT WAY YOU WILL KNOW THE BUSINESS BANK & BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER
EVEN IF YA PAY A SMALL PORTION OF IT BY CHECK DO IT TO GET THE BANK ACCOUNT NUMBERS
Ya need that to withdraw awarded funds from! ONCE SUIT IS SETTLED.
Make up story to pay partial by check (to much for credit card, gotta pay some by check........)
Just get back the old parts, all of them NOW!

Just walk away and say thank you when ya pick up car. Make sure all the old parts are there, including the FILTER!
Ya wanna learn what happened to your tranny, that's all. Ya wanna learn from what got damaged.
Do they have a business license number on paperwork?
IF SO.....
Call your state see if any complaints lodged against them at the State Level.
Also ask for owners name & address & ask if he owns any other tranny shops, too.
State should give information easily.
Good luck.
Lot of leg work will make this feel better in the end.
Don't waste time agruing with credit card company for help. They are powerless as you signed ok to do work.
YOU have to get your money back, this way
Or get evidence & bring to local TV NEWS Consumer action reporter!
