Cam choice

ok, i need some more power. i want to do the swap to a 350 eventually, but im a poor college student, and i dont have enough to get engine + tranny + rear end. so, for now, i figure lets just beef up my v6. where can i get a cam kit that will add on some serious ponies. emissions is no problem in my area, so i dont need to worry about that. also, does anyone else have any tips other than a new cam (other than porting the heads or boring the block over). any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.

check out crower cams. also go to a 1.52 roller tip rocker arm by comp cams. have you put a higher fllowing exhaust system on there? it is hard to make these things go without the cubic dollar behind it. you can get another set of heads and get them ported while you still have your car running.

Its hard to get serious HP out of a 2.8, unless you're throwing lots of nitrous at it. The long runner design of the intake limits HP, and there are lots of restrictions in the heads and intake. Most people are running cams in the .440s lift, around 206-214 duration. Anything more than that, and you'll need deeper gears (3.73) and a stall (say 2200-2400).

i would recomend the wolvereen blue racer cam. i have that in my bird. the specs are in my signature.there is a very noticable power increase. it picks up faster than stock 2.8's. you really feel the power around 2-2200 rpm on up. if you go with that cam i would recomend 3:73 gears or at least a 2000 stall converter. im debating on the gears or a converter this winter.

you should get the GM performance parts cam, it is bigger than any other one that you can get. it is made for GM by CRANE and up here in Canada it is $228 with tax. I haev one im my car and not many other mods and i have seen a HUGE increase in overall power and i am running stock rearend and 5-speed tranny. the part number for the one i have is 12364059. i highly recommend this one

TomP. Define "Major" tune up.
Also, im not looking to go so wild on a cam such that i need to change my gears and put a stall converter in, thats just taking even more money away from the final goal of getting the v6 out of there. i just need something to appease myself for now. from what im seeing so far, that GM cam 84fire mentioned sounds like a plan, but i would like the specs on it. thanks for the input.

Do the distributor rebuild, its easy and you'll be amazed how much power you get back. There are several posts on it here.
