Yes. Doing a brake stand relies COMPLETELY on the front brakes to operate well. Because as you know, the rear tire (yes, singular...damn non-posi), spins... The power to the back tire overcomes the back brakes...so the only reason the car isn't moving is because the front brakes have enough power to hold it still while the back tire spins. If your brakes are bad, particularly the front, you won't be able to do brake stands. If his brakes are THAT bad, I suggest you tell him to get a brake job very soon. My brakes are fairly bad (my pads are worn and my rotors are warped to hell) and I can still do a brake stand like I'm not even trying.

Your friend needs good front brakes.
A new set is around $20-30 and about an hour to install yourself if you have the right torque sockets.

As for brake burning it, I will admit its fun, but it can make a metal hamburger out of your transmission in a hurry.

Amen to that. Not to mention the torque converter, and fry out your rear drums too... It's a hard habit to break. I've had my car for a year and about a month ago decided to give it up.

It is a hard habit to break. Did you ever notice after doing a brake stand you think to yourself why did I do that, or how does this transmission stand up to my tortue.

YES. Every time. Not to mention that voice in the back of your head that comes every time you're doing one and whispers "this is gonna be the one that blows the transmission". And that annoying pinging sound of pebbles and sand, etc. sticking to the tires to be flung under the car? Ugh. Ever do a burnout WITHOUT doing a roll off? Bad stuff...that noise happens for like 4 days. I almost went mad...
