Adjusting Valves

I'm putting on a set of Comp Mags on my GF's 3.1 RS and was wondering if I set them the same way I do my 350 TPI? Run car and back off till they tick , tighten them till it stops, then give a half turn? I dont do it without running the engine. I've tried millions of times and can never get them right.

You'll have an oily mess- oil retainer clips will not fit under the plenium, things are too tight from the 60* motor.

Is that the way to do it though? I've adjusted a ton of cars with it running and yet to have an oily mess, unless the motor is revved.

For what it's worth, the GM service manual says to adjust the lifters with the engine off... we don't have solid lifters or anything; you can get all your adjustment with the engine off- and the only adjustment is seating the pushrod mid-way into the lifter... by putting the lifter plunger in the middle, you get the full range of self-adjustability.

ehh too late. I didnt have a oily mess so thats good. Thanks for the advice..

I was told to adjust lifters a good idea is get a piece of rubber hose and put it on the rocker. As you tigthen you can hear it tick through the hose. Once the ticking stops coming from the hose its tight.

I have never done this. But a few well trained mechanics if I do, then try this method, they say it works everytime.

Only thing is; what's tight? Are they talking about a solid lifter? If you tighten up a hydraulic lifter so the plunger bottoms out, then it's not adjustable anymore.
